Athens Acropolis, Athens

The Basics

The Acropolis complex is one of the most visited attractions in Greece, included on most Athens city sightseeing tours and often combined with a visit to the New Acropolis Museum or other Ancient Greece sites, such as Epidaurus, Cape Sounion, and the Temple of Poseidon. The best way to explore the ruins is on a guided city walking tour, taking in highlights such as the iconic Parthenon, Propylaea (Propylaia), the Temple of Athena Nike, and Erechtheion.

Highly recommend a trip to the acropolis as no trip to Athens will be complete without it. I recommend if traveling at this time to just go to the tickets office directly at the acropolis as no lines in these times of COVID. No libes anywhere. After a visit here go to tge museum.

Athens All Included: Acropolis and Museum In a Cultural Guided Walking Tour
We enjoyed the tour of Acropolis and the Museum very much. It was a great opportunity to learn about the Greek gods, history, and their architecture. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and pleasant. We had the 8:00 o’clock tour that we recommend to beat the heat and the crowd in a summer day. Wear walking shoes and be prepared to go up and down on sometimes rocky paths. Highly recommend it.

Our guide Alexia was AMAZING. Ask for her if you can. She is extremely knowledgeable and friendly and her experience with the logistics of the tour was amazing as we never had to wait in line for the museum or the Acropolis. I would take any tour she guides.

Athens Tour-Skip the line: Acropolis, Acropolis museum, Plaka and Greek lunch
This tour was perfect. Great timing and a wonderful guide, Dorian. She was so informative and well versed. This was the perfect combination of culture, history, and rest along the way up to the Acropolis. Plus we opted to have a wonderful lunch following the tour.

Betty was very knowledgeable professional and friendly. Without her explanation of the history of the Acropolis we would just be watching a bunch of ancient rocks.

The lines weren’t too long the day we went but being able to just go through the entrance was very nice. The acropolis itself was amazing as was the way up. The view is incredible. Bring water. It can get quite hot and the terrain is tiring.

Athens All Included: Acropolis and Museum In a Cultural Guided Walking Tour
Some in my party had never seen the Acropolis and were in awe of its magnificence. Grossing did an outstanding job of explaining its existence and the periods of time through which it withstood. She picked out the most important parts to see in the museum which was wonderful. Thoroughly enjoyed her humor and explanations throughout this tour. She was outstanding and her name was my grandmothers name.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Choose between a standard entrance ticket and a multi-attraction ticket that includes access to other sites.

  • Admission lines can take up to two hours in peak summer, so it's best to book ahead.

  • The Acropolis provides little shade—bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water if visiting in the summer months.

  • Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking over uneven ground.

  • Most areas of the archaeological site are wheelchair accessible; an elevator is located on the northwest side.

How to Get There

It's impossible to miss the Acropolis of Athens—you can see it from just about anywhere in the city, and the easiest way to get there is on foot. Alternatively, the closest metro stations are Thesion, Monastiraki, and Acropolis. Ticket booths are located at the foot of Acropolis Hill, on both the north and south sides, from where it's a short walk uphill to the archaeological site.

When to Get There

The Athens Acropolis is open year-round, but it can get extremely busy and hot in the summer months. To avoid the crowds, arrive right before opening or just before close, when most of the day-trippers and cruise passengers are yet to arrive or have already left. Travelers on a budget might prefer to visit in winter—ticket prices can be reduced by up to 50 percent between November and March.

Where to Enjoy the Best Views of the Acropolis

Find a prime view of the Parthenon at the top of Mars Hill; capture the archaeological site in its entirety from Filopappos Hill, located just southwest of the Acropolis; or gaze out over the Acropolis and the surrounding city from Lycabettus Hill, the highest point in Athens. The clifftop ruins are at their most atmospheric at night—choose a rooftop bar or restaurant in central Athens for a great view of the illuminated Acropolis.
