Dijon Cathedral (Cathedral of Saint Benignus of Dijon)
The basics
Said to be built on the grave of St. Benignus—Burgundy’s first martyr, who was executed by the Romans for heresy in the 3rd century—the Dijon Cathedral is one of the city’s key historical highlights. Originally built in a Romanesque style—and later rebuilt according to Gothic traditions following a devastating fire and a later collapse—the cathedral is known for its relatively spare and austere design, though its distinctive turrets and colorful roof tiles give it a personality all its own.
The cathedral can be seen during Dijon walking and sightseeing tours and is also easy to visit independently, as it’s right in the center of town.
