The Scores, St Andrews, Fife, Scotland

The basics

The castle was badly damaged during the Wars of Independence and little of the original castle remains today. A new structure was built around 1400, which later served as a prison; during the Scottish Reformation it was a notable site of religious persecution. Visitors can see the bottle dungeon where the Scottish reformer John Knox may have been imprisoned. You can learn more about the castle’s dramatic history during a guided tour of St. Andrews. The ruins also offer impressive views of the North Sea beyond the rocky coast.

Kate was an excellent tour guide. She provided a balanced tour about golf and the history of St Andrew’s. She was pleasant, able to answer all our questions and enthusiastic to share her knowledge with us. We had a fabulous tour.

Sean was the perfect guide for this excursion! Extremely friendly, knowledgeable, flexible and great at responding to questions. He met us at the port and took us to the places that were a must for us to see. Plus showed us a couple of charming fishing villages. We all highly recommend this excursion with Sean!

Private St. Andrews Tour with Dedicated Local Guide
The young female guide was an expert historian with a vast amount of detail in her narrative. She was organized and moved us through the tour at a reasonable pace. The weather turned quite cold and rainy and she tried to find shelter for us along the way. Excellent!!

St Andrews, Falkland and Fife Villages Tour from Edinburgh
The guide picked us up on time. Gave a nice briefing of what to expect before we started. He did an excellent job narrating everything all day long. This is the third country Ive used Viator tours, and service has been very consistent. I would highly recommend Viator tours.

Kingdom of Fife & St Andrews Full-Day Guided Private Tour in a Premium Minivan
We had a great day out of Edinburgh to the Kingdom of Fife and St. Andrews without having to rent a car and negotiate driving on the other side of the road. Our expectations were exceeded, we learned quite a lot from our guide Sandy and we visited several unique places that I doubt we could have found on our own. It was a great opportunity to get out of the city and see some of the beautiful Scottish countryside with a local guide. Everyone in our party really enjoyed the tour.
