Edinburgh Castle

Castle Hill, Edinburgh, EH1 2NG

The Basics

Explore Edinburgh Castle on a time-saving skip-the-line walking tour or delve into the history of this iconic fortress on a private tour. See the room where the macabre 15th-century Black Dinner took place; admire the Stone of Destiny; take a photo with the massive Mons Meg cannon; visit the room where Queen Mary gave birth to King James IV; and find mysterious graffiti left behind by prisoners of war.

Many Edinburgh city tours also include a visit to the castle, whether you want to explore by private mini-bus, vintage taxicab, or on a hop-on hop-off bus tour.

Gotta visit the castle in Edinburgh...
Edinburgh Castle is a must see and doing it via Viator allowed us to get tickets at the time we wanted and have someone tell us all the details of what one can do inside. Our guide was very knowledgeable. There were LOTS of tours gathering at the same time so following her BIG umbrella was helpful. Perfect.

Royal Edinburgh Ticket with Hop-On Hop-Off Tours, Edinburgh Castle Admission
I utilized every aspect of the Royal Edinburgh Ticket and felt it was good value for the amount I paid. The green line had a live tour guide and the blue and red lines had an audio guide. The audio guide was more thorough. The Royal Edinburgh Ticket made it easy to get inside the Royal Yacht Britannia, Palace of Holyroodhouse and Edinburgh Castle. For the castle I was able to set a time to visit. The other sights I just showed up. It was easy breezy!
We recommend for the seniors to use Hop on - hop off for their trip.

We’re all seniors and the driver dropped us off in a convenient way to see Edinburgh Castle. The driver was very friendly and courteous. This is a very nice way to see places of interest for the seniors.

1. Edinburgh Castle: Skip-the-Line Guided Walking Tour
Australian Dave was very informative, knowledgeable and patient. He gathered us up in a small manageable group and projected his voice so as all of us could hear. Plenty of facts were given so at the end of his guided tour we could then proceed inside the different area at our own pace with pre-knowledge of what we were interested is seeing more in-depth.

Small Group Royal Mile Walking Tour with Optional Entry to Edinburgh Castle
Margaret Ann was a good tour guide and we enjoyed walking the wonderful Royal Mile and hearing stories of long ago and how Edinburgh was hundreds of years ago. We ended up at Edinburgh Castle where most did the tour inside the castle but I did not. It was a beautiful day and I enjoyed the grounds around the castle, such a beautiful spot.

Alasdair was our fabulous tour guide. We appreciated all the great history he gave on this tour. There is so much to see on this castle tour. We did not realize all of the structures we would be allowed to explore. We loved it!

How to Get There

Edinburgh Castle is located atop a hill in the Old Town. The city’s primary train and bus terminal (Edinburgh Waverley) is within walking distance of the castle.

When to Get There

The castle is open year-round and is busiest in summer. Arrive early to avoid crowds and plan to visit the Crown Jewels first, as lines form quickly and can take over an hour to get through. Afternoon visitors can enjoy the daily firing of the “one-o’clock gun,” while August travelers can sometimes see the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo performing just outside the castle walls.

Best Photo Spots in Edinburgh Castle

The castle’s sweeping Old Town city views are no coincidence—its hilltop position was carefully chosen to protect the city. For great views and equally great photographs, head to the windows near the row of cannons along Half Moon Battery, the grated overlooks across from the military prison, or St. Margaret’s Chapel, the oldest surviving part of the castle.
