Stirling Castle

Castle Wynd, Stirling, FK8 1EJ

The Basics

Stirling Castle ranks high on the agenda for visitors to Scotland. Many visitors explore the castle on day trips from Edinburgh and Glasgow, which typically also visit other Scottish Highlands highlights such as Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, Loch Ness, Glen Coe, and whisky tasting experiences. Travelers should book castle tickets in advance to avoid long lines and sold-out dates.

A wonderful day!
A wonderful 1 day tour with various experiences that made the whole day feel full and fascinating. Our guide, Shut, shared just enough insights to add that depth and colour to make the day even that much more interesting and have one feel like one knew just a wee bit more about Scottish history and culture! A wonderful day overall. Highly recommended!

Loch Lomond, Stirling Castle and the Kelpies from Edinburgh
The guide was fantastic. Great stories and he knew the area well. At the end, he drove us by the three bridges due to being ahead of schedule. The Kelpies was just an ok experience, the boat tour at Loch Lomond was very enjoyable and we loved Stirling castle. The lunch stop in Aberfoyle was disappointing. The food options were limited and the quality of the food was low, and, by the time we got our food, which took a very long time, it was past time to leave:

Walking the grounds of Stirling Castle, views from the castle, the village surrounding the castle. Also very good distillery tour at Glengoyne. Beautiful countryside along Loch Lomond.

Loch Lomond, Stirling Castle and the Kelpies from Edinburgh
Excellent day! Not too much packed in, and definitely enough time to take in the sights. Hairy Coos, Stirling Castle, The Kelpies and Loch Lomand gave a brief wonderful portrait of the historic and majestic Scotland. Shug, our driver and guide, made the trip truly enjoyable.

Bannockburn & Stirling Castle Private Tour from Greater Glasgow
We had a marvelous time with Stewart! He really took care of us — made sure we were comfortable and safe. His car was so clean, we thought it was brand new. His knowledge of the sites was amazing. He was so personable that by the end of the day, we felt like we were saying goodbye to an old friend. Highly recommended!

Loch Lomond, the Trossachs and Stirling Castle from Glasgow
The ride was a lot of fun. Unfortunately the bus had issues. We had to stop to make sure it would be safe to drive and that took time away from our time at Loch Lomond. Also the usb ports weren’t working so we had to conserve our battery power in our phones. And, the sound system in the bus was bad so we couldn’t hear the driver hardly at all. We could’ve used at least another hour at Sterling Castle—it was well worth the visit. Overall, the bus tour was good. 😩

Loch Lomond, Kelpies & Stirling Castle Tour Including Admission
Highly recommend this day trip. Not too long, ample time at each spot. Be sure to wear hiking/walking shoes (cobblestone and hilly castle grounds, hiking the optional 1.5 miles around Loch Lommond). Carrie was knowledgeable, funny, and an overall great guide.

How to Get There

The easiest way to get to the castle is via guided tours from Edinburgh, Glasgow, or Greenock. During busy summer months, the parking lot at Stirling Castle often fills to capacity; travelers can also use the Castleview park-and-ride service (located on the western outskirts of town off junction 10 on the M9). Alternatively, ride the train from Edinburgh or Glasgow (both take under an hour). The 20-minute walk from the train station, though not long, is somewhat steep.

When to Get There

July and August attract the biggest crowds. Be prepared for varying weather, even in summer; rain and chilly temperatures are common, and parts of the castle complex, such as the Queen Anne Gardens, leave visitors open to the elements.

Stirling’s Links to Scottish Heroes

For “Braveheart” fans, Stirling Castle will be forever linked with one name: William Wallace. From the castle, you can see the National Wallace Monument on Abbey Craig hill, where in 1297, Wallace and his troops prepared to fight off the invading English army. Robert the Bruce, known for his decisive victory over the English at nearby Bannockburn in 1314, is also commemorated at Stirling Castle. Look for a statue of the sword-carrying King of Scots on the castle’s esplanade.
