The Basics

Palazzo del Podestà, Florence’s oldest public building, served as a barracks and prison before becoming the National Museum of the Bargello in 1865. Today, the art museum is home to an extensive collection of Renaissance works displayed in a series of vast apartments, including gold, armor, bronze animals made for the Medici family gardens as well as tapestries. The centerpiece of the Bargello collection, however, is the statuary that dates from the 14th to 16th centuries.

This is one of the most popular art collections in Florence; avoid a long wait by booking skip-the-line tickets ahead. Many Renaissance Florence walking tours include a stop at the Bargello; there’s a lot of art and history to take in, though, so consider reserving a private tour with an expert guide.

BARGELLO Private Tour in Florence
Anna was a wonderful guide. She first gave an overview of Florence history. Her tour through the Bargello was the best of our trip. She knows the collection so well and gave us interesting insights.

Florence: Bargello Museum Tour
Meetup went great. We were the only two for this time slot and basically got a private tour. Ivano was very knowledgeable and helped us gain a deeper appreciation for the works in this fascinating yet under-appreciated gallery.

BARGELLO Private Tour in Florence
The Bargello is a smaller museum that has some very special statutes. Alda was great and was very informative about the history behind the pieces. I originally was hesitant on if we needed this tour in our itinerary but am very glad we did this one! It is one you could do on your own, however I would not have learned as much by ourselves.

Bargello Museum Private Tour: Michelangelo's Bacchus & Donatello's David
Susana was our guide at the Bargello, She was on time, spoke great English and knew an extraordinary amount about the pieces in the museum. She tailored our tour to what we were interested in seeing. The Donatello exhibition was showing at the Bargello and the Strozzi when we were there and we wanted to concentrate on the Donatello. She was very obliging and I feel we got a thorough exposure to those pieces of sculpture. Susana was also kind enough to walk us to the Strozzi where we were going to continue our tour on our own. The Strozzi was several blocks away and she knew exactly what shortcuts to take to get us there.

BARGELLO Private Tour in Florence
Guide was brilliant but had to cut tour short due to medical emergency linked to a friend of the guide. Yet this was outstanding with focus on the development of perspective.

The Donatello Exhibit in Florence—a “must see.”

BARGELLO Private Tour in Florence
Alda is an excellent tour guide. She is knowledgeable about history and art (she is an artist herself) and has great enthusiasm about Donatello’s sculptures, which were the focus of the tour. She also told us about the history of the Bargello, which was fascinating, and about the Medici dynasty. I highly recommend her as a tour guide.

BARGELLO Private Tour in Florence
Alda did very well. From the beginning, she gave a very good explanation of the background of Florence, especially the commercial development that shaped the city and region and made Florence special.

Palazzo della Podestà

With its fortified and crenellated facade, maze-like interior with fine halls, balconies, and loggia overlooking a courtyard, this austere, fortress-like building was the inspiration for Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.
