Florence Santa Croce Basilica (Basilica di Santa Croce)

Piazza di Santa Croce, Florence, 50122

The Basics

Work on the Santa Croce Basilica began in 1294, though the facade and bell tower are 19th-century additions. The world’s largest Franciscan church, Santa Croce houses 16 chapels decorated with some of the most important Florentine fresco cycles dating from the 14th century. It’s part of a larger complex including a refectory, two cloisters, and the Museum of the Opera of Santa Croce.

The Santa Croce Basilica is a highlight of any visit to Florence, and many sightseeing walking tours and shore excursions include a stop at the basilica and adjacent complex along with other famous sights like the Uffizi and Accademia Gallery (Galleria dell'Accademia). Due to its artistic and historic importance, the church is among the most visited in the city and there are often long lines to enter; booking a guided tour with skip-the-line entrance in advance is a must in the crowded summer months.

Santa Croce Church Tour in Florence
We booked the tour of Santa Croce at the recommendation of our Duomo tour guide. Our guide for Santa Croce was Guido and he was wonderful! He was friendly, approachable, & very knowledgeable. He was passionate about the history of the church, its construction, and the famous figures who are laid to rest here. He was so kind as to give us dinner recommendations afterward.

Must-See Places In Florence

Private Tour of Uffizi Gallery and Santa Croce Basilica
What a marvelous tour. I would strongly recommend hiring a guide to walk you through these places and tell interesting stories about them. Our guide added so many interesting details that we would not have noticed on our own, and that gave the experience so much more texture than it otherwise would have had.

Beautiful Basilica

A beautiful basilica full of wonderful features and religious artworks. A useful map was provided, and good information on all the displays allowed for an interesting visit. Particularly liked the The Last Supper in the Refectory, and the measures taken to keep it safe from potential floods, the works of Donatello and Giotto, and the fact that Galileo is buried there.

Santa Croce Church Tour in Florence
We were told by several people that Santa Croce Church was a destination we should not miss while in Florence. My husband and I were glad we listened to this advice. Our guide, Guido, was well informed and did a wonderful job explaining throughout the tour. All of our tours that we booked on Viator were well organized and had excellent tour guides. We did do a few tours arranged by other companies and they did not meet the same standard. I highly recommend going with Viator when given the opportunity!

A Must for Any One in Florence

Santa Croce Church Tour in Florence
Francesca was an absolute delight! She was knowledgeable and interactive. For a tour scheduled for only an hour, Francesca could make the most of the time and still wanted my family to want more. Her pride for Florence and the Church of Santa Croce was evident with each site she showed us. You could tell she loved to speak about the church and the city and could provide so many small details that aren't in history books but would only come from local knowledge. We took many tours in our travels through Italy, but Francesa was repeatedly the top choice when going over our experiences. I would highly recommend her, and I can say that my family wants to return Italy thanks in large part to Francesca's tour.

When to Get There

Florence is one of the most visited cities in Italy, and its main churches and monuments can be very crowded in summer. To enjoy the city sights in relative peace, schedule a visit for spring or fall. Piazza Santa Croce holds a charming Christmas market each year through the month of December, with stalls selling holiday decorations, artisan crafts, and seasonal foods.
