Cong

Cong, Ireland

The Basics

Surrounded by lakes, forests, and streams, Cong is a charming village near Connemara best known as the location for the 1952 movie The Quiet Man. Visitors can head to the Quiet Man Museum, which includes an exact replica of the White O’Morn cottage from the movie; take walks through the surrounding countryside; do some boating on the nearby river; and enjoy the village’s small shops and cafes.

The village of Cong sits next to the 350-acre Ashford Castle estate, which was once owned by the Guinness family and is now home to one of the country’s best five-star hotels. Several day trips from Galway City and multi-day tours from Dublin include Cong and the surrounding region on their itineraries.

Connemara Day Trip from Galway: Cong and the Kylemore Abbey
Loved driving through Connemara and learning from our tour guide about the culture and history here. Cong was small and pretty. Not much to do or see. The Abbey Gardens were very pretty but the castle was much like visiting any other museum. Nonetheless, the tour was worth the cost.

Connemara Day Trip from Galway: Cong and the Kylemore Abbey
A long trip with lots of sheep! The countryside was pretty. Our guide was good at letting know about the history of the area. Kylemore Abby and the gardens were underwhelming, given all the hype they receive. Cong was fun for a short stop. Overall a pleasant, but unexciting, tour.

Connemara Day Trip from Galway: Cong and the Kylemore Abbey
Way too much time on the bus in my opinion. I wish we had spent more time at different stops. Even if that meant less stops. Beautiful views and good weather! The bus driver was ~okay~. Could have been more entertaining but he was nice. Good day!!

Connemara Day Trip from Galway: Cong and the Kylemore Abbey
Lovely tour. Wish there was more time at each place and that the tour guide wasn't talking the majority of the time. It was exhausting to hear him talk so much. But the stops were beautiful.

Great trip. Our driver Mike was very knowledgeable and a safe driver on the narrow windy roads. Would definitely recommend.

Connemara Day Trip from Galway: Cong and the Kylemore Abbey
We enjoyed the kylemore grounds and viewing the lakes. If I had it to do over again, though, I would have booked a hiking tour. The many stops detracted from the tour. Still, it was a great way to see a lot of the country.
