The Basics

The crenelated grey-stone silhouette of Kylemore Abbey is a striking sight amid the rugged, scree-patched hills of the west of Ireland. While you can admire and photograph the abbey and its scenic surrounds from the parking lot, an admission fee is required to enter the grounds. Entrance tickets provide access to the restored ground floor rooms of the abbey, the neo-Gothic church, and the Victorian walled gardens and teahouse, as well as to complimentary history talks and guided garden tours in summer. The abbey is often included on Connemara and Wild Atlantic Way bus and rail day tours from Dublin and Galway city.

Connemara Day Trip from Galway: Cong and the Kylemore Abbey
Loved driving through Connemara and learning from our tour guide about the culture and history here. Cong was small and pretty. Not much to do or see. The Abbey Gardens were very pretty but the castle was much like visiting any other museum. Nonetheless, the tour was worth the cost.

Connemara Day Trip from Galway: Cong and the Kylemore Abbey
A long trip with lots of sheep! The countryside was pretty. Our guide was good at letting know about the history of the area. Kylemore Abby and the gardens were underwhelming, given all the hype they receive. Cong was fun for a short stop. Overall a pleasant, but unexciting, tour.

From Galway: Guided tour of Connemara with 3 hour stop in Kylemore Abbey
The drive there is wonderful—the scenery is wild and more than I expected! Lots of great short stops along the way at scenic overlooks :) really enjoyed our time at the Abby. Was just the right amount of time to check out the garden, grab lunch, and walk through the Abby and chapel :)

Connemara Day Trip from Galway: Cong and the Kylemore Abbey
Way too much time on the bus in my opinion. I wish we had spent more time at different stops. Even if that meant less stops. Beautiful views and good weather! The bus driver was ~okay~. Could have been more entertaining but he was nice. Good day!!

Lovely tour. Wish there was more time at each place and that the tour guide wasn't talking the majority of the time. It was exhausting to hear him talk so much. But the stops were beautiful.

From Galway: Guided tour of Connemara with 3 hour stop in Kylemore Abbey
We ended up on this tour about a week into our 2 week stay in Ireland. What an amazing experience with someone who is knowledgeable! We felt covid safe and learned so much history and got to see some many amazing sites. What an experience that our kids will also have for the rest of their lives. Would highly recommend.

From Galway: Guided tour of Connemara with 3 hour stop in Kylemore Abbey
While staying in Galway, Ireland, we took a day tour out to Connemara National Park and Kylemore Abbey. The day started with rain and strong winds. The wind was so intense that our stop in Connemara was canceled as it wasn’t safe to hike there. It was blowing the water up off the lakes and even forcing gusts of water upward off the waterfalls on the mountains. It all worked out nicely though as the rain let up just as we arrived at Kylemore castle and there was plenty to keep us busy there. Built in 1868 by Mitchell Henry for his wife, the castle later became a Benedictine monastery for nuns who fled Belgium in World War I. The nuns still reside there and craft beautiful chocolates, scarves, and other items for visitors to purchase. We walked up to the neo-gothic church that Henry built in his wife’s memory and got to look inside at the beautiful restoration. We ended with a nice lunch at the cafe on the grounds before heading back to Galway. Our guide, Mike, was great and shared so many interesting facts and stories. He stopped at a few great locations for photo opportunities, which was much appreciated.

When to Get There

Kylemore Abbey is open year-round; the garden teahouse is open from March through mid-November. Summer is a good time for lakeside picnics on the grounds, while the colder months showcase the barren beauty of the Connemara winter. June through September are peak visiting months. Arrive before 12pm or after 4pm to avoid crowds.

Romance and Tragedy at the Abbey

Part of the abbey’s greatest appeal is the romantic—and tragic—story behind its construction. No expense was spared by politician Mitchell Henry, who built the abbey for his wife, Margaret, after they had honeymooned in the area years before. Sadly for the Henrys, tragedy struck and in 1874, Margaret died after contracting “Nile fever” on a trip to Egypt. A heartbroken Mitchell had a mausoleum built here to house her remains as well as a beautiful neo-Gothic church dedicated to her memory.
