Tlaquepaque

Tlaquepaque, Jalisco

The Basics

Despite the city’s surprisingly expansive residential sprawl, most of Tlaquepaque's top attractions are found in the historic center. For that reason, it’s entirely possible to explore places such as the Museo Pantaleón Panduro, Mercado Juárez, and El Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad in just day or two. Even so, for history buffs, art fans, and travelers short on time, some tours offer comprehensive, organized tours to Tlaquepaque, many of which include stops at other popular Guadalajara destinations.

Great and informative experience!
Fernando was an amazing guide! We learned a ton during this trip about the histories of Tonalá and Tlapenaque, as well as about Guadalajara in general. The artisans we met at the pottery places were very friendly and informative, and they were excited to teach us about their techniques and family traditions. I’d highly recommend anyone to join a tour with Fernando and to visit these places.

How to Get There

Tlaquepaque sits a roughly 30-minute drive from downtown Guadalajara and several buses run between the two—look for vehicles marked "Tlaquepaque" on Avenida 16 de Septiembre between Madero and López Cotilla. However, it’s likely more convenient—and still entirely affordable—to take a taxi or arrange a tour which includes round-trip transportation.

When to Get There

Tlaquepaque is a year-round destination and Guadalajara is known as a city of eternal spring, although if you’re looking to escape the crowds, summer tends to see the arrival of fewer tourists. Regardless, you’ll always be able to wander the pretty, pedestrianized streets without needing a jacket. Midweek is typically quieter too, while Sundays evenings can be rowdy but great fun.

Beyond Ceramics in Tlaquepaque

Ceramics may be one of the town’s principal draws, but there’s plenty more to recommend this pretty day-trip destination, including many converted colonial mansions. Jewelry lovers should dedicate some time to wandering through the gallery-cum-jewelers, Galerías Sergio Bustamante, while music fans can’t miss a traditional, mariachi-filled evening at El Parián.
