Straddling the California–Nevada border in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, Lake Tahoe draws visitors for its truly stunning setting of sparkling blue water surrounded by snow-capped mountains. This alpine dreamscape offers a variety of winter adventures—here are a few ideas to suit everyone in your group.
Skiing & Snowboarding
Boasting more than a dozen resorts, over 100 lifts, and 22,000 acres (8,903 hectares) of terrain surrounding a pristine blue lake, Tahoe is a skiing and snowboarding paradise with endless downhill and cross-country skiing options. Head to South Lake Tahoe for big-name resorts like Heavenly and Kirkwood, or hit the trails used by Olympic athletes during the 1960 games at the North Shore’s Squaw Valley.
Snowshoeing and Cross-Country Skiing
If you prefer to take it slow, trek through snowy meadows and pine forests on a pair of snowshoes, available for rental at most major resorts. It’s a great way to soak up the beauty of the Lake Tahoe winter—no lift ticket or lessons needed. Book a tour if you prefer a guided experience, or head out on your own with a snowshoe or cross-country rental. For something extra special, book a nighttime snowshoe tour at Alpine Meadows Ski Resort that leads you to the mid-mountain Chalet for dinner.
Ice Skating
While you can’t skate on Lake Tahoe itself (it never freezes), lace up and take a spin at the indoor South Tahoe Ice Arena or Heavenly Village’s outdoor rink. In North Lake, visit the rink at Northstar Ville or head to the Squaw Valley Olympic Ice Pavilion for stellar mountaintop views and the chance to follow in the tracks of ice skating superstars.
Sleigh Rides & Snowmobiling
Dash through the snow on a one-horse open sleigh or its modern equivalent—a zooming snowmobile. These activities are not as widely spread around Tahoe, but there are a few outfitters—check out Borges in Sand Harbor for sleigh rides and try one of several operators around the lake for guided snowmobile tours and gear rentals.
Sledding and Tubing
Racing down a snow-covered hill in a sled or tube is a wintry thrill for all ages that never gets old. Bring your own gear or rent it at one of Lake Tahoe’s family-friendly tubing hills, including those at Heavenly, Squaw Valley, Echo Summit, Hansen’s, and Northstar resorts.
