Montreux Flower Promenade (Chemin Fleuri)
The basics
Montreux is a popular destination for day-trippers from Geneva, with tours typically dedicating a full day to ticking off the region’s highlights, including Chaplin’s World, Chillon Castle, and–of course–Montreux’s famous promenade. As you stroll, notice the town’s traditional architecture and look out for the Freddie Mercury statue, which has fast become a top attraction itself. Benches, cafes, and decks provide ample opportunity to stop along the way and soak up the striking vista.
Things to know before you go
- The promenade’s wide, flat paths are wheelchair and stroller friendly.
- Public bathrooms are dispersed along the route.
- Don’t forget your camera, as the walk is perfect for holiday pics.
- It can get cold along the lake, even in summer, so it’s worth carrying a layer or two.
- Locals love to swim in the lake when the weather is good, so bring your bathers just in case.
How to get there
Montreux is around an hour by car and train from Geneva. From Bern, the town is a 1-hour drive and 2-hour train ride, changing at Lausanne. The promenade is just a minute’s walk down the steps from Montreux Station. Parking in the area around Chillon Castle is largely free and there are metered parking lots in the town center.
When to get there
Spring and summer are the best times to enjoy the flowers along the promenade, when their colorful blooms are in full effect. Winter visitors don’t miss out though, as the city sets up its Christmas market, one of Switzerland’s biggest, along the stretch each year.
Montreux’s Medieval History
Chillon Castle, or Château de Chillon, is one of the most visited landmarks in all of Switzerland. The island castle is actually in Veytaux, just next to Montreux, and dates back at least to the 10th century. Visitors can head inside to learn more about Switzerland’s medieval past, with some tours including admission. The Swiss Travel Pass also includes entry to the historical attraction, plus around 500 more, as well as unlimited use of public transportation.
