The Basics

Neuschwanstein tours can be taken from Munich, Fussen, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, or Frankfurt, and are often combined with visits to other attractions along Bavaria's Romantic Road. Many visitors choose to admire the castle from the outside only and find that the most stunning views are from the Marienbrucke Bridge. The interior, including the opulent Minstrel's Hall and the grand Byzantine Throne Room, can only be visited on a guided castle tour.

Amazing tour!
We took the upgraded version of this tour and are so so happy we did. We had spacious seats, a smaller group, they offered us coffee, water, snacks, soft drinks, and even beer at the end of the trip. We had Stevo as our guide and Vlad as our driver, both were so kind and helpful throughout the trip. The tour itself was also beautiful, would definitely recommend!

Day trip is a must if you are in Munich. The guide is professional and funny. Linderhoff castle is small but the interior is grand as well as the garden. Neuschwanstein Castle is like a fairytale, it is beautiful and full of character.

Franca is knowledgeable and nice. She's also very patient with some of the guest who are late. Tony drives like a pro, it was a smooth and enjoyable ride. Overall a good experience. If I have change anything it would be to have an additional hour at Neuschwanstein Castle.

Neuschwanstein and Linderhof Castle Day Trip from Munich
A bucket list visit to Neuschwanstein Castle, which was a delight. Linderhof Castle was equally impressive and an added bonus of a drive through Oberammergau made for a very special day. Christine was a warm and generous hostess.

Neuschwanstein Castle and Linderhof Palace Day Tour from Munich
Great tour. Buses are clean and comfortable. Phillips our guide made sure we were well informed and comfortable. Trip is highly regimented and not enough time is allowed to get to the back to the bus after the conclusion of the tour. Prepare for a lot of walking and stair climbing. Recommended.

Neuschwanstein and Linderhof Castle Day Trip from Munich
Had a fantastic day in Bavaria with friends. The arrangement was excellent, the bus was clean and air-conditioned. The tourist guide Kristine was friendly and knowledgeable. We spent and amazing time in Linderhof and around the Nueschwanstien castle. The scenery is out of this world. I wish the speaker was a bit louder :)

Private Neuschwanstein Castle skip the line Tour in Mercedes Van
First, I've done several private day tours before and this was by far one of the best experiences I've ever had. Aiman was absolutely amazing, so kind and knowledgeable and just the right amount of information. Aiman was on time, presented a very clean and comfortable ride and even stayed late in the day with us to accommodate a request. We saw beautiful places and had a very memorable day, highlight of our 12 day European trip. I highly recommend Aiman and this tour.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Ticket lines can be long in peak season—plan ahead and book a skip-the-line tour to avoid the hassle.

  • Wear suitable walking shoes if you opt to walk up to the castle—the road is uphill and uneven in places.

  • The castle is wheelchair-accessible with buses and carriages that can bring visitors up the hill to the entrance; inside, you'll also find elevators.

  • Plan to spend about two hours at the castle, excluding wait times.

How to Get There

The nearest town to Neuschwanstein is Hohenschwangau, about 75 miles (120 km) southwest of Munich. Buses and trains run between Hohenschwangau and the castle. From the ticket booths at the bottom of the mountain, it's a scenic 30-minute walk through the forest to reach the castle, but regular shuttle buses and romantic horse-drawn carriages also run the route in peak season.

When to Get There

Neuschwanstein is open all year round, but with up to 1.4 million annual visitors, it can get extremely busy, especially in July and August. To avoid the crowds, get there before opening at 8am or after 3pm, when most of the day-trippers have already left. The castle looks majestic at any time of year, but the snowfall of mid-winter and the colorful foliage of early fall can add an extra edge to your photos.

Visiting Bavaria's Fairytale Castles

Bavaria is home to dozens of royal castles, but the most famous were built for King Ludwig II, the "Mad King" or "Swan King." In addition to Neuschwanstein, visitors can tour the nearby Hohenschwangau Castle, Ludwig's childhood home; Herrenchiemsee, inspired by Versailles; and Linderhof Castle, another of the king's masterpieces.
