Ways to visit Naples National Archaeological Museum (Museo Archeologico Nazionale)

Opened in the late 18th century to house Charles III of Bourbon’s private collection, the National Archaeological Museum holds one of the one of the world’s finest collections of Greek and Roman artifacts in the world, with highlights including the Farnese Bull and Hercules sculptures, mosaics from the House of the Faun, frescoes from Villa di Agrippa Postumus and Casa di Meleagro, and bronzes from Villa dei Papiri—all recovered in Pompeii.

The National Archaeological Museum is one of the most popular attractions in Naples. To avoid a long wait to enter, book a museum tour with skip-the-line tickets. Many Naples walking or hop-on-hop-off tours include a stop at the museum, as do full-day shore excursions. For a deep dive into this important collection, consider a private tour with an archaeologist guide.

Very Impressive Archeological Museum Tour
We think this tour with Ilaria Fiore is a must do before heading to Mt. Vesuvius, Pompeii, and/or Herculaneum. You make your way thru the Archeological Museum in a methodical, yet very engaging way, that prepares you for some of the most impactful events of history. Also, Ilaria does a very good job describing the “lasagna” layers of centuries that culminate in the Naples of today.

Private Tour of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples
Many years ago I visited Italy and was told that much of what had been discovered at Pompeii were housed in Naples. We had booked a guide to help us understand what was housed in the museum. Wow! Our guide had such a deep understanding of the period and the antiquities. We could not have asked for more. It was only when we had to return to the ship that we left the wonderful museum.
Overwhelming Huge.

The Archaeological Museum of Naples with an Archaeologist Private Tour
It was fascinating to hear and see some of the history of Pompeii and Herculaneum brought to life by Teresa, our guide. She made the time fly by with her wonderful knowledge and story-telling. And we very much appreciated her tips for lunch spots afterwards, along with some special things to find in Napoli.
