Gjastykki is a beautiful and rugged rift valley to the north of the caldera Krafla, in the north of Iceland. Gjastykki was literally blown apart by the eruption of Krafla during the years 1975-1984. Two of the three areas that were active during that time are still warm. The area is covered with multicolored slag from the Krafla eruption and bears stark witness to the movement of the tectonic plates. On the eastern bank of Öskjuvatn you will come to find crater Víti. a 2,4 km hike from leading us the crater Víti and the Lake of Askja. Bring along a swimsuit and a towel. You will be able to swim in crater Víti. The water can be 24-28 ° C. Askja is a caldera located in the center highland of Iceland, in the mountains Dyngjufjöll. Inside the caldera is a deep lake, and a crater with geothermal water. It is sometimes suitable to bathe in it although the path down to the crater is often impassable due to how steep it is. The trip it self to the Caldera is through the biggest desert of Iceland, called Ódáðahraun, along the glacier river Jökulsá á Fjöllum.
