The Basics

Visiting every one of the palace's 700 rooms would take days, so a Versailles guided highlights tour is the best option—options range from skip-the-line access tours to private and small-group tours that explore the history of Versailles. Combo tours which visit Versailles alongside the Eiffel Tower and Louvre (or the village of Giverny) are great for first-time visitors.

However you choose to visit, don’t miss the gold-framed windows in the Hall of Mirrors, the priceless antique furniture in the King’s Grand Chambers, and the regal Royal Chapel. Meanwhile, in the gardens, the Grand Canal dominates while Musical Fountains dance to classical music.

Versailles Bike Tour with Palace Timed Entry Ticket & Marie-Antoinette's Domain
This was a wonderful experience from start to finish! Our guide Arnaud was the best - knowledgeable, funny and engaging. Highlights were shopping at the amazing Versailles market for our picnic lunch, cycling through the beautiful Versailles gardens, the visit to Marie Antoinette's hideaway and fantasy village, and, of course the Palace of Versailles itself. Arnaud gave us great historical background which made the tour come to life. Our family of six loved every minute of our action-packed day.

Versailles Palace Guided Tour with Skip the Line Access from Paris
We had a wonderful and knowledgeable guide and the bus was clean and comfortable. The small group was very nice but there were a lot of young kids in our group, which was strange as we were three adults. Otherwise, top notch. We walked straight to the entrance and past a huge line.

Poling our tour guide was extremely friendly and positive especially considering the cold and rainy weather. And early to appointment which I appreciated. She seemed very knowledgeable and stayed engaged with all of us.

Versailles Palace Skip the Line Entrance Ticket and Breakfast at Restaurant ORE
Not having to wait in line is a definite plus. The breakfast was tasty and beautifully presented. You have to see Versailles to believe it. So much extravagance. Makes you wish you were royalty.

Versailles Palace & Marie-Antoinette's Estate Private Guided Tour with Lunch
My family and I scheduled the tour, not knowing anything about Paris or how to get around. The tour pick up was easily found (we stayed in Chessy). Clémence drove us safely to our destination. She was funny and engaging. She was extremely insightful during the tour. It was amazing to have our day planned and executed with very little effort on our part. Clémence recommended places to visit and eat while in paris. She was amazing! We give 10 stars to her!!!

When to Get There

At night, when the palace lights are illuminated and the sun has set, the gardens' Musical Fountains are at their most magical. Visit the Versailles Gardens on a Saturday evening between June and September to see a particularly special fountain performance crowned with a fireworks display. Otherwise, arrive early and avoid weekends for a quieter experience.

What to Do in Versailles

While the Palace of Versailles is undeniably the main draw in the tiny town of Versailles, there's lots more to see and do. The decadent Musée Lambinet is a must, while the Versailles market is one of the largest in France. The Versailles Cathedral also makes for some great photos. Meanwhile, on the Versailles estate itself, don't miss the Hameau de la Reine, a tranquil spot overlooked by many.
