Cayo Paraiso (Paradise Island)

Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

The basics

Those staying in Puerto Plata will likely depart from the fishing village of Punta Rucia to reach Cayo Paraiso. Speedboats take visitors on the short ride across the bay to the island where you can swim and snorkel in the surrounding coral reef and lagoon. The snorkeling is considered among the best in the Dominican Republic. Watch for vibrantly colored tropical fish, sea turtles, stingrays, eels, and more. Bright coral formations are found, as well.

So nice. Guide was amazing at explaining Dominican history and where we were. The waters are crystal clear and recommend you do the snorkeling with the guide. I would say take some cash so you can tip by service since that’s where their main source of income is from. If you are going with you her children the waters do get choppy on the way back so maybe opt for the catamaran. But I think the speed boat was sooo much fun. On the way back we stopped and bought some souvenirs that once we got to our hotel we forget. In a couple of bourse I had communicating this and they had found our bag and are returning it to us. 10/10

Last week My family and I had a FANTASTIC time on this excurtion!! From the ride there to the boat ride then the food at the restaurant... Everything was wonderful!! Benjamin kept up with all of our questions prior to the excursion. Hamlet was a such a pleasure to have as a driver, a guide, a companion and so much more. He was such great company that we hired him again to drive us to the airport. Last but not least, on the island, GianCarlo (I pray I have his name right-Bryan) was the best ever!! He took us around the reef and really showed us the best there was to see there. The gentleman driving the boat also made it fun!! The ride through the mangroves was FUN with a capital F! This really is a great excursion all around!! if you're in Puerto Plata, DO NOT miss this one! You will NOT regret doing it.

Things to know before you go

  • The natural landmark El Morro, a 777-foot (237-meter) limestone mesa, is located in Monte Cristi National Park, which is also home to mangroves, subtropical dry forests, and swamps.

  • Keep an eye out for The Seven Brothers Cays (Los Cayos Siete Hermanos)—several small islands that serve as the nesting grounds for a number of reptile species.

  • There is very little shade on the island and typically none on the boat, so hats and sunblock are highly recommended.

  • Tours typically include equipment for snorkeling, lunch, and unlimited drinks (alcoholic and nonalcoholic).
