Things to do in  Puerto Plata

My family of four had a great time. We were picked up at the port right after we docked and we were well taken care of by Edwin Tours. The experience at the falls was well run and the guides were helpful and did a good job making sure everyone was safe and having fun. Would recommend to anyone looking for a fun tour in Puerto Plata.

This was my second time doing this excursion and I will probably do it the next time I visit Puerto Plata. It starts with a brief hike through the woods to the start of the first waterfall. At each waterfall you will have the choice to either jump (or slide down a natural slide if present), or climb down a rope ladder if you're afraid of jumping. From there you will serenely float (with a life jacket) to the next waterfall. It's an experience that combines the adrenaline of jumping with the relaxation of floating in beautiful waters.

The tour was as exhilarating as promised. Rosario, the tour owner, was personally there catering to everyone's needs. Although we were the only 2 not part of a cruise, he made it a point to look after us instead of ignoring our needs. He actually went above and beyond in making this a memorable event. Our separate pick up and drop-off driver Jose was amazing. He was waiting for us when we got out of the hotel and took great pains to make our ride comfortable and enjoyable, entertaining us with stories and sights. He did not let our lack of Spanish get in the way, being adept at using Google translate! We would highly recommend this tour company and the waterfall experience must not be missed on a trip to the Puerto Plata/Cabarete region.

Of the 3 excursions we did around puerto plata (snorkeling, atvs, city tour), the extensive city highlights tour was our favorite! Fabio was our guide and was excellent, very attentive to us at all times, and took many pictures for us too. We got the cable car up Mount Isabel de Torres, saw the tropical gardens there, Independence Park, San Felipe cathedral, San Felipe fort, Macorix rum factory tour, umbrella street, Paseo de Doña Blanca, and many shops too. We also got snacks, water, and rum along the way. Absolutely no complaints on anything! Excellent way to see the city!

Everything about this experience, from the ease of booking to the quality of the tour, was wonderful! First, a little background - I have recently been diagnosed with spinal stenosis. I can only walk for a few minutes, and can only stand for about 30 seconds, thus I rented a scooter for my cruise. Both Viator and this vendor were very helpful in making me feel at ease about using my scooter for the tour. At first I rented a non-foldable scooter and they said they thought they could accommodate it. Then I changed my mind and rented a foldable scooter which would fit in a vehicle better, and they said they could definitely accommodate it! So on our Puerto Plata port day, I drove my little scooter, with my husband walking alongside, out on the long walkway to meet the tour. My husband and I decided to do a private tour from this vendor and it worked out great. We met our driver Samuel and our guide Juan Pablo, who were just the best! Juan Pablo has such a great personality and was a wonderful guide! He and my husband folded up my scooter easily and he put it in the back of his van. First stop was the Cable Car and that is definitely an experience not to be missed. Juan Pablo helped me every step of the way, even seeing to it that I was the first to drive my scooter into the cable car. It was a very beautiful ride to the top! Then Juan, my husband, and I rode and walked the paths to see the beautiful flora and pools and landscaping. Juan Pablo made me feel invincible as he had me motoring up and down hilly paths to see everything that the park offered. When I couldn’t navigate a path, Juan Pablo literally picked up my scooter and got me on a better path. He was just amazing and I thank him so much! But the cable car was just the beginning. Then we drove in to the city and saw all the cute places there. We went to the Amber museum, which is small but fascinating. And yes, I could drive my scooter all through the museum! I bought a pretty larimar necklace there and I can’t wait to wear it! We went to the umbrella avenue and I drove my scooter. Juan Pablo made sure I could use my scooter everywhere! We had a great city tour! My point is that whether you are disabled or not, I know you will have a wonderful experience at a very reasonable price!

The pick up point was about a mile from the ship. It wasn’t a difficult walk. Our tour was a wonderful introduction to Puerto Plata. Even I tasted the rum. I’m a non drinker and everyone laughed at the funny faces I made. Walking in the town was a good pace and there was time to see and enjoy. Edwin and his guide were informative and helpful. It was a great tour.

The tour was more like a shopping tour. Almost all stops included a stop in a "store" to purchase either Cigars,Gems,clothes,painting etc... Our guide Alfredo was great! He wanted to show us the best of his city. You did get the chance to see most of Puerto Plata, but nothing to really write home about. I would have given 5 stars just for our tour guide, but the bulk of the tour was going into stores. (thus minus one star) I would recommend this due to price.

Luis and Edwin were very accommodating. We had an unexpected private tour of Puerto Plata. We were supposed to be two couples, but the other couple canceled and we ended up riding in the minivan for a private tour. The visit to the rum factory was great as we sampled 8 types of rum. We are not into churches or buildings, but that was part of it. The jewelry store could be skipped as Fifi, the owner was not honest. She overcharged me for a ring. I realized it while in the store and questioned her about it, and she became defensive. So I decided to just leave. The fort is a great historical place to visit.

This excursion was by far the best part of our trip in puerto plata! A day full of adventure! The staff were very friendly, food was amazing & the activities were so much fun! I was expecting the atv rides to only last 15 minutes but we got to ride them for a whole hour which was amazing! 10/10 definitely recommend it!

Edwin was really nice and accomodating. He gave us plenty of explanation and showed us a few things around Puerto Plata. The waterfalls were stunning. It is great to swim around caves and rocks. The jumps were super scary but there are always alternatives. Definitely worth it!

This trip was so exhilarating!!! The waterfalls were beautiful and jumping off a 25ft waterfall was amazing! The zip lines were a ton of fun! Lunch was also fantastic! If we were to return to Puerto Plata we would for sure do this again!

Last week My family and I had a FANTASTIC time on this excurtion!! From the ride there to the boat ride then the food at the restaurant... Everything was wonderful!! Benjamin kept up with all of our questions prior to the excursion. Hamlet was a such a pleasure to have as a driver, a guide, a companion and so much more. He was such great company that we hired him again to drive us to the airport. Last but not least, on the island, GianCarlo (I pray I have his name right-Bryan) was the best ever!! He took us around the reef and really showed us the best there was to see there. The gentleman driving the boat also made it fun!! The ride through the mangroves was FUN with a capital F! This really is a great excursion all around!! if you're in Puerto Plata, DO NOT miss this one! You will NOT regret doing it.

Perfect excursion for the adventurer who's in good physical shape. Hiking. High jumps off platforms into pools of water. Swimming. Natural rock slides. Super fun in the beautiful lush, mountains of Puerto Plata. We only had time for the 12 falls, but surely wish we had been able to do the 27. Also, we did not have time for the zipline which looked like loads of fun. Carlos (our guide) and his helpers, were fantastic! If you want a challenge and thrill, GO FOR IT.

Alexander and Fernando were SO much fun! We were in Puerto Plata for the day on a cruise and they made this the BEST excursion of the trip! Great conversation, so many fun activities, so many beautiful places to see! We ate great authentic Dominican food, drank authentic Dominican drinks (Mama Juana es muy deliciosa), danced, rolled cigars, rode the cable car….it was absolutely incredible. There was just the right mix of riding in the van to our stops and walking around (not too much walking but enough to stretch your legs). Thanks for an amazing trip we will definitely be back! 😃

Must do while in Amber Cove/Puerto plata region. Hike was fun, scenic, and great exercise to the falls. Then jumping and sliding down so many unique and scenic falls was just exhilarating. Raul was an amazing lead tour guide, very knowledgeable, courteous, and very mindful of keeping everyone safe. His other assistant tour guides were great as well, didn't catch their names, but one in particular was very funny through whole tour. And they were also very attentive to all of us. Great tour!

I cannot even begin to describe how much fun we had on this trip! It was the best day of our vacation by far. The 1.5 hour bus ride out to the other side of the island from Puerto Plata was not as bad as we were expecting. We were able to see the local towns/villages and Andy gave us a verbal tour. The boat was super clean and the food/drinks were great! Mimo, our favorite crew member, helped us take pictures and took video of us snorkeling! The food we had at lunch was incredible. Definitely try the paella. If you're on the fence, BOOK IT! So worth the money for the pictures alone :

The Damajagua excursion is definitely a once in a lifetime experience. Well worth a day of your vacation if you are in the Puerto Plata area. Make sure you call to confirm your reservation the day before your trip. You are picked up from your hotel lobby at an agreed upon time in an open air truck with bench seating. From there you drive to the waterfalls site and pick up your helmets and life jackets. As a women, I would recommend wearing your bathing suit with work out shorts and a tank top over it and water shoes. The life jacket you will be wearing will be damp, if not wet when you receive it. The tank helps with any chafing and the shorts will be practical for the hike. Leave behind jewelry and sunglasses. Your personal belongings will be locked in the cab of the truck while you are out on your excursion. The hike is about 45 minutes and mostly uphill to the 12 waterfalls. There are two big jumps and a couple of chutes that you will go down. You always have the option to climb down instead of jumping, however I would not recommend this trip to anyone not used to strenuous activity, people with major fears of water/heights, or children under the age of 13. The whole trip is very beautiful and scenic and the guides are AMAZING. TIP THEM! Afterwards you have a buffet lunch with booze, take a short trip though the city and to a local stone carver and then back to the hotel. My only complaints were that we were picked up a half hour late from our hotel and while the city/stone carvers trip was educational, by that time we were wet, cold, and tired and just wanted to get back to the hotel. Make sure you purchase the zip drive of photos for 45. It is well worth it. They send you photos and video of the whole trip.

The trip was very good, the guide and driver where super friendly and informative. Puerto plata is beautiful and you get to see all the city highlights on your own space. Well recommended 10/10

Edwin was the best tour guide EVER. He was extremely personable and knowledgeable about Puerto Plata, the waterfalls, as well as the Dominican Republic itself. He was great, highly recommend!

This is a highly recommended tour. Edwin and his guy is very accommodating. They will take care of you and you will get to see to the best of Puerto Plata.
