Thrihnukagigur Volcano

Reykjavik

The Basics

Thrihnukagigur is a relatively new sightseeing destination. It was only discovered, by an Icelandic cave explorer, in the 1970s and opened up to tourists in 2012. Travelers can experience it by booking a guided tour. It’s about a half-hour south of Reykjavik and tours typically begin with a 2-mile (3-kilometer) hike to the volcano across a lava field. Visitors then board an open elevator for a 6-minute journey that descends 700 feet (213 meters) into the magma chamber. There you are free to explore the dormant volcano's cave floor, its vividly colored rocks, and frozen magma icicles, for usually around 35 to 40 minutes. After returning to the surface, visitors are typically rewarded for their efforts with a bowl of traditional Icelandic meat soup.

Tours involve a moderate amount of walking but helicopter tours are available for those unable to do the hike.

It was a bit of a challenge with very strong winds against us going to the Volcano, but the Guides were all great, and it was a fantastic experience! Definitely worth going to.

Incredibly fun day! And what an adventure to be lowered into the throat of a dormant volcano. Very unique experience. Guides were helpful, knowledgeable, safety conscious, and to a person had a wicked and delightful sense of humor. Highly recommended.

This experience was AMAZING! The colors in the volcano were phenomenally beautiful and this was truly a onxe in a lifetime experience. The hike up there was OK - there is no pressure to do it quickly, which is nice. The soup and cocoa were also nice touches.

Amazing experience - horrible weather

Once inside the volcano it was awesome! The Death March across the lava field on the way back was miserable. Cold, high winds, rain going sideways, low visibility, eyeglasses a mess, waterproof boots and gloves failed - no fun. But I would do it again! Better food options at the base camp would be an improvement. Going out to the restroom was no fun either.

I took my daughter who is 8 as a father/daughter experience. The guide Unnur was awesome and fed us geological information the whole trip (above and below ground), with assistance from Oli. The hoist operator and base camp ladies were also awesome. The experience is beyond words and a memory that my daughter and I will always share. Thank you.
