The Basics

Whether you hike around the shore, cruise around the lagoon on a RIB boat, or set sail on an amphibian boat tour, the Jokulsarlon lagoon is spectacular from all angles. Full-day tours from Reykjavik typically combine a visit to the lagoon with a glacier hike or ice cave tour in the Skaftafell National Park, or a visit to natural wonders such as the Seljalandsfoss or Skogafoss waterfalls.

Amazing trip!
This was the first of two south coast tours I did as they both covered different things but this was definitely the best tour for the South Coast! Our guide was amazing and knew so many interesting and entertaining things. The route itself was also so well planned so it felt like we got to see so much but it wasn’t too tiring either. We saw the waterfall, diamond beach, vatnajokulspjodgardur National Park and were even lucky enough to see the northern lights aswell

A Must Do Tour

South Coast and Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon Day Tour from Reykjavik
If you had to choose only one tour to do in Iceland 🇮🇸 look no farther. This is The tour! Don’t hesitate, as we did, by the length of this tour. Carve out an entire day of your itinerary and do it. The bus is a Volvo greyline and very comfy (although the windows needed a good cleaning, lol) it makes many stops for breaks. Great Food places along the way. (Try the pizza place in Vik) 2 waterfalls, glacier lagoon, black sand beach are all IG worthy and “Bucket List” things to see.

Glacier lagoon - south coast tour, boats on the lagoon not included.
Excellent private tour. Our guide Villie was incredibly knowledgable and gave us a fantastic day. We learnt about Iceland so much. We are well traveled and have high standards, and we were very happy with our tour guide - He even took us to places which were not part of our itinerary. Pickup was on time. Best tour company so far. Vehicle was very clean & in excellent condition. He was great and spoke excellent English. Time and money well invested.

2 Day Ice Cave & South Coast: Glacier hike, Jokulsarlon lagoon & Northern Lights
Beautiful trip, waterfalls, glacier hike. No northern lights but the rest wonderful. Our guide Pale(?) Was the best and the girl guide Vicky in the glacier priceless. She helped me all the way being patient and professional so I was able to admire and be overwhelmed with the hike and not finish in the hospital due my lack of skills. Highly recommend. Of you can make Three days even better.

This was an incredible tour. Bjork was incredible as a guide. She was knowledgeable, helpful and patient with the group. It was worth the drive to see the ice caves.

Crystal Blue Ice Cave - Super Jeep From Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
Really great tour. It helped to know that the guides are really invested in the tours - they are maintaining the caves and access points way after hours. It was very easy - don't need to be in excellent shape. Had a lot of fun. One of the highlights of our time in Iceland.

Day Trip to the Glacier Lagoon: Jökulsárlón from Reykjavik
We enjoyed the trip very much. Since we went in January, we didn't get to go behind the waterfall because it was dangerous. But we visited the black sand beach in Vík and it was gorgeous! There was an extra stop at a lagoon near Jökulsárlón as well for us to see the glacier up closer. On our way back, they also stopped for the Northern Lights. They were very kind and we recommend the trip very much! We definitely recommend warm clothes, as it was cold and windy.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • While the lagoon is accessible year-round, boat tours are weather dependent and only in operation from April to November.

  • The icy landscapes can be chilly even if the sun is shining, so bring warm clothes, a hat, and gloves even on a summer trip.

  • There's a small café by the lagoon, where you can purchase hot drinks and snacks, or use the restroom.

  • While it’s possible for wheelchair users to view the lagoon, many of the activities on and around the glacier are not suitable for those with limited mobility.

How to Get There

The Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon is located on the southeastern border of the Vatnajökull National Park on Iceland’s south coast, about 230 miles (370 kilometers) east of Reykjavik. From Reykjavik, it’s roughly a 4.5-hour drive along the Ring Road.

When to Get There

It’s possible to visit the lagoon all year round, but the summer months are the most popular—expect crowds. Winter visitors benefit from smaller crowds and better deals on tours and accommodation, but boat tours don’t run between December and March. During that time, it’s best to visit with a guide, as road conditions can be difficult. Budding photographers should time their visit for sunrise or sunset for the most impressive views.

Wildlife at the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

Iceland’s glacial landscapes harbor a surprising variety of wildlife and the Jokulsarlon lagoon is a haven for seabirds, especially Arctic terns and skuas. Look out for seals swimming between the floating icebergs, or, if you’re driving from Reykjavik, stop to admire the puffin colonies at Dyrholaey lighthouse or Reynisfjara beach along the way.
