The mosaics both on the floor and walls were amazing. Basilica was easy to find, short walk from Rome Termini. Lots of cafes nearby if you arrive early for tour.

The Hidden Gems of Santa Maria Maggiore | 2 Hour Guided Tour
The tour was good but it didn't include everything that was listed. The lady giving the tour said there was no reason to go to all levels, which was disappointing as this was the reason I picked this tour. She was nice.

Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica Guided Tour
Frederico was an excellent English tourguide. Already outside while waiting he told about the foundation legend. Inside we heard about the reused marble, the popes and the two different iconography styles.

Snow … in August?

According to legend, plans for the church—also known as Madonna della Neve (Our Lady of the Snow)—were drawn by Pope Liberius in the snow that miraculously fell on this hilltop on Aug. 5 in the fourth century. Every year on that date, the miracle of the snow is commemorated with a cascade of white petals falling from the ceiling onto the altar, one of the most evocative religious events in Rome.
