Ways to visit Catacombs of Rome (Catacombe di Roma)

Five of the catacombs are currently open to visitors, including St. Sebastian and St. Callixtus. A trip to the catacombs is often combined with a visit to the Roman countryside and the ancient Appian Way, either on foot or by bike. Choose a tour tailored for kids and families, one focused on ghosts and mystery, or a walking tour with skip-the-line access to beat the crowds.

For an exclusive after-hours experience, tour the crypt at night when it’s closed to the public. An English-speaking guide explains past burial rituals and gives historical context to the sights.

Great tour
Constantine was very genuine, helpful and informative. The Appian Way wall and gate were worth stopping for. The Catacombs had such rich Christian history. We are glad we booked this tour.

Guide picked up our group at the hotel and the first stop was the catacombs. Very informative and interesting. Then we drove to an original section of the Appian way. Guide even offered to drop us off at another site.

Our driver was very professional and informative and peasant. The catacombs tour was about 30-45 minutes with a guide from the actual site. He was great. We saw another catacombs area years ago and this one is preserved very well. If you haven’t seen something like this before you should consider it.
Excellent private tour of Appian Way and a nice group tour of the catacombs

Wonderful tour with an excellent guide. It was nice to get outside of the city to see places with slightly fewer people. The guide we had was very good and provided lots of insights and information on the areas we viewed. The only thing to note (and why it's 4 stars versus 5) is that the guide cannot take you into the catacombs as there are dedicated tour guides for that and those tours are in groups rather than private.

Constantin was a wonderful guide. He messaged prior to the tour and picked us up on time. He was very knowledgeable, showing us around Rome, and stopping at some extra stops along the way! Highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to see those extra places in Rome that you may miss. The catacombs were phenomenal and visiting the Roman wall museum was also a highlight! An excellent tour!

Mauro was an excellent guide and very knowledgeable about the history of everything Roman. We had a wonderful morning with him. We asked him if he could recommend a good local restaurant, and he dropped us at a restaurant owned by friends. It was great!

Catacombs of Rome and Ancient Appian Way 3-Hour Tour with private driver
Our guide Mario was great. He picked us up right on time and drove us down to the San Callisto catacombs. Fortunately it wasn't crowded so he bought our tix for the next time slot. Not sure what happens if it's crowded though? We really enjoyed the tour through the catacombs by one of their tour guides. Then Mario took us to an original section of the Appian Way and was generally very informative as we drove and he showed us around a little bit. We were headed to the train station right after he dropped us off, and there were 5 of us plus luggage. Instead of grabbing 2 taxis, we negotiated a price for Mario to take us to the hotel, collect our bags, and he drove us over to the train station. We appreciated that, even though it cost us more than taxis.

Lorenzo was a wonderful escort and guide. The car was very comfortable and Lorenzo got us to the catacombs and talking about important sites to and from. He also took us to San Paola Basilica which was beautiful. Wonderful and personal experience.

When to get to there

Most of Rome’s crypts and catacombs are open year-round, 9am–5pm, with a short break for lunch; they're typically closed on Sundays. Limited access to the catacombs makes booking in advance a good idea, especially around Easter and between May and Sep., when Rome swarms with travelers. The cool catacombs make for a great break from Italy’s summer heat, but the quieter months are recommended for thinner crowds.

Rome’s strangest sight?

Perhaps the most interesting sight in the catacombs is the Capuchin Crypt, or Bone Chapel, an area containing—and decorated with—the bones of 4,000 Capuchin friars. Crypt rooms are themed by different types of bones, from skulls to pelvis and leg bones.
