Piazza Trento, 5, Tivoli, 00019

The Basics

Most Tivoli tours departing from Rome include visits to both Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa. At the latter, tour archaeological ruins of temples, libraries, and thermal baths, including the Maritime Theater, the grand Piazza d’Oro, the Imperial Palace, and the Canopus. At Villa d’Este—commissioned by Cardinal Ippolito—admire views from the Vialone Terrace and the picture-perfect Oval Fountain. To get the most out of your visit, opt for a full- or half-day guided tour through the Lazio countryside.

Tivoli villas, worth seeing
Hadrian villa is interesting from historical perspective. Villa d'Este, on another hand, has amazing gardens and fountains, especially Organ Fountain. It has a hidden mechanism playing music without human intervention, using water pressure.

Tivoli Day Trip from Rome with Lunch Including Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este
This trip gave us a nice, quiet break from the bustle of Rome. We saw two villas, one ancient and one medieval, and had a delicious lunch. Our tour guide, Diana was lovely and knowledgable!

Tivoli Full Day Trip from Rome: Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este
We enjoyed getting out of Rome and taking in Hadrian’s Palace Ruins and Villa d’Este. We rode on tour bus alone to the sites. Local guide was kind, if a bit repetitive. Lunch was OK, filled the void. We liked hearing the history then having time to explore on our own. Fun local tips shared. Gardens weren’t in bloom but water features were stunning. Small fountains were undergoing renovations.

Historical Tour to Villa Adriana and Villa D’Este in Tivoli
My husband and I were the only ones on the tour so we ended up having a private guide and driver. Our guide was enthusiastic and informative such that we really enjoyed our time at Villa Adriana. Unfortunately, the water was not turned on when we visited Villa D'Este so we did not get to see the fountains, but it was still nice.

Private half-day to Hadrian Villa&Villa d'Este from Rome
My half day trip to Tivoli was fantastic! I can't believe I had never heard of this fantastic city before. It was an easy 30 min ride from central Rome into the beautiful countryside. My amazing guide, Alessia, even took me to a shop for fresh made olive oil before heading back to Rome! She made the history come to life and was such a joy to be with for the day and learn from her. Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este were both breathtaking!

A wonderful tour of the countryside that gets you away from the hustle of the city only a 45min drive away. The ruins and remnants are breathtakingly beautiful and we learned a lot from our incredible tour guide.

Tivoli Day Trip from Rome with Lunch Including Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este
Terrific guide (Diana) and a lovely trip contrasting a sumptuous renaissance villa and the ruined largest Roman one. Highly recommended day trip, only 30-40 minutes from Rome.

Tivoli Full Day Trip from Rome: Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este
This day trip was the perfect way to see some sites outside of Rome. It was very easy and well-organized. We had a wonderful day in Tivoli visiting these villas. We did not do lunch through the tour, but instead enjoyed purchasing sandwiches from a local shop and sitting in the town square. The independent time was perfect. Our tour guide Giuseppe was wonderful.

Heritage Site: Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli Tour from Rome
The guide Monica was so knowledgeable. She was clear and engaging in both English and German. Villa Adriana is staggering in scope. Hard to believe it really existed. Villa d’Este, especially the gardens, we’re something to behold. We’ve been in Italy for a month and this was a high point.

When to Get There

The Villa d'Este is open from 8:30am until the late afternoon or evening depending on the season, while Hadrian's Villa has slightly shorter hours, again depending on the season. Given Tivoli’s many gardens, spring is a great time to visit.

What to do in Lazio, Italy

Like Rome, Tivoli is set in the Italian region of Lazio. Although the Italian capital is the main draw for most visitors, take some time to visit the rejuvenating thermal waters of the Baths of Bagnaccio or the tumbling Monte Gelato waterfalls. And the weird and wonderful world of the Sacred Wood of Bomarzo (Sacro Bosco di Bomarzo) is an underrated gem.
