Trastevere

Rome, Province of Rome, 00153

The Basics

Many of Trastevere’s narrow streets are closed to traffic, so the best way to explore this ancient Roman neighborhood is by getting off the beaten path with a guided walking tour—though Vespa scooter and Segway tours are also fun options. Trastevere is famous for its excellent cuisine, so consider taking a food tour to discover traditional Roman dishes, Italian wines, and open-air food markets. Alternatively, tour after dark to rub elbows with young Romans out for a night on the town.

Tried some new things
This tour gave us the chance to try a few foods & restaurants we wouldn’t have tried on our own. The family run deli had fresh bufala mozzarella to try. We couldn’t help but buy extra. The Jewish square gave us the chance to try the fried artichoke and fried rice ball. The gelato was top notch too.

Trastevere Food Tour
This tour has been the highlight of our Vacation here in Rome so far! We were able to taste multiple different dishes while exploring the city and seeing culture along the way! Gabby our tour guide was more than accommodating, she was very informative and gave a lot of history of the Roman food and being in trastevere! Gave us recommendations and we were able to meet other people from other countries! Would definitely recommend this!

Rome Trastevere Tour by Segway
Julio was an amazing guide and showed us Rome in an interesting and fun way. Totally enjoyed riding the segway! Totally worth it! This was the tour of parts of Rome rather than the Trastevere, yet the tour was absolutely amazing and well worth the time.

Rome: Trastevere & Jewish Ghetto Walking Tour
Hands down the best historical tour I've ever taken! Our guide (I believe his name is Alessandro? It's been a few weeks since our trip. He was born in Trastevere and is an archaeologist by training) is extremely knowledgeable and a pleasure to talk to. He was happy to answer our many questions. We learned so much and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The pace of the tour was perfect as well. Definitely recommend this tour!

This was a lovely tour. Learned a lot about the history of Trastevere. The food tasting was delicious. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and kindly helped us find a taxi for our ride back to our hotel as it was very busy.

Small-Group Rome Food Walking Tour: Trastevere, Campo de' Fiori, Jewish Ghetto
We had such a good time. There was so much food and it was delish. There could have been mortadella, but that is just me. :) From Pasta to the Jewish Arancini, it was all wonderful. Then of course, to end the evening with gelato was the best. We meet so many fun people on these small tours. We now have new friends in California and South Carolina. Thanks for a great evening. Ciao.

Trastevere Food Tour
Start your trip here. Great overview of all Italy has to offer culinarily. Great guide Kopal was highly knowledgeable and recently lived in neighborhood we explored. Experienced more 3 hours than in 3 days of touring.

When to Get There

Trastevere is delightful to explore all year round, though the neighborhood is best appreciated when the weather is mild. For a unique look into one of the most lively neighborhoods in the Eternal City, take a leisurely stroll by night. Like much of Rome, the area gets crowded in summer.

Caravaggio in Trastevere

In the early 17th century, Caravaggio was commissioned to paint “The Death of the Virgin” for the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Scala in Trastevere. The master painter’s realistic depiction of the Virgin as swollen and bare-legged was considered blasphemous, and the parish rejected his work. It now hangs in the Louvre in Paris.
