Ways to visit Alcatraz

Alcatraz is only accessible by tour and tickets often sell out well in advance. Lock in those high-demand tickets by booking a San Francisco tour that includes admission to the infamous federal penitentiary and a day of city sightseeing by bike, bus, boat, or Segway. Popular stops include Chinatown, North Beach, and the Ferry Building. Other options combine Alcatraz with cable car rides, bay cruises to Sausalito, or Marin headland adventures.

On the island, explore at your own pace with the self-guided cellhouse audio tour. You'll also find National Park Service exhibits, video presentations, docent- and ranger-led guided tours, and special programs that vary by season.

Alcatraz with San Francisco Bay Cruise
My husband and I really enjoyed our ferry ride and time on Alcatraz! Great that you stay as long as needed and take the next ferry. Ranger info was very helpful and the audio tour very informative- loved the sound effects with the cell doors closing. A special extra was meeting and book signing by a former inmate!

Great day out for the family. Enjoyed both Alcatraz then the Aquarium. The audio tour was the highlight for both adults and the kids aged 9 and 13.

Combo Tour: Alcatraz Island and San Francisco Grand City Tour
The guide, Michelle, was excellent with great knowledge of San Fransisco, its historia and all places we stopped at, as well as of buildings we saw from the bus. She was keen to answer our questions. The stops were long enough. We appreciated that we were a small group. Even Alcatraz was interesting according to me. However, my husband was not that impressed by Alcatraz. The sunny and warm weather contributed of course... The tour can really be recommended.

Big Bus San Francisco Hop-On-Hop-Off Open Top Tour and Alcatraz Combo
Hop on hop off bus tour as good as usual having been on Big Bus tours in other cities. Easy to use. The trip to Alcatraz was well organised, easy to find departure points. The audio tour was well worth doing. Big bus tours said we needed masks so we bought some but no-one used masks! so save your money. Well worth a visit, very interesting.

This trip was highly recommended via family who had previously been in February. I have to agree it was an amazing experience and the guide information made it more interesting of Alcatraz back in those days.

Alcatraz Tour Plus Muir Woods and Sausalito Day Trip
We enjoyed the Alcatraz tour. Due to health issues and the incline, we were transported up to the actual cell block by a tram. Once there, we did the audio tour. Staff were helpful. The view of San Francisco from Alcatraz was amazing. Would highly recommend

Alcatraz Inside and Golden Gate Bridge Bay Boat Cruise
Visit to Alcatraz has to be on anyone's list when visiting San Fransisco. Shame so many areas now closed to public. Good trip round the Bay but boat seen better days. Difficult to see through some windows as plastic windows splintered.

Alcatraz with Muir Woods and Sausalito Tour
Robert our tour guide was excellent. Very knowledgeable and friendly. Muir Woods was beautiful. Sausalito was a bust. Nothing to do there. Don’t waste your time. Alcatraz was great but it was unescorted so you can do this on your own. I give it 5 stars only because of our tour guide .

Alcatraz Island Tour - Package Deals
The money was well-worth the experience as it is something I can now check off my bucket list! From the second I stepped foot onto the docking bay leaving the mainland until returning back, everyone included in the tour - staff members and other tourists, were so incredibly friendly and helpful. This made my day that much more memorable. I loved seeing and hearing about the history and witnessing firsthand the remnants of what used to be at Alcatraz Island.

Things to know before you go to Alcatraz

  • Alcatraz tickets include round-trip ferry transportation and an audio tour; you can take any ferry back to the city and they depart roughly every half hour.

  • Bring a camera and a coat for the chilly but beautiful ferry rides.

  • You'll find a few snacks offered on the ferry and water available on the island.

  • Allow about 2.5 hours for the full Alcatraz prison experience, including both 15-minute ferry rides.

  • The walk from the ferry dock is steep and hilly; an electric shuttle departs from the dock twice an hour and the cellhouse has elevators.

When to visit Alcatraz

Alcatraz cruises typically depart every half hour between 9am and 4pm. The early-bird trip departs a little earlier, while the limited Alcatraz night tour allows visitors to stay on the grounds until 9:25pm and includes both live boat narration and a guided walk from the dock to the prison. Alcatraz tickets are hardest to come by in spring and summer.

The History of Alcatraz Island

Originally established as a military prison in the mid-19th century, Alcatraz is perhaps best-known as the maximum-security facility that housed Al "Scarface" Capone and other notorious gangsters. After the prison closed in 1963, Native American activists occupied the island from 1969 to 1971. It was then opened to the public in 1973 and is now the site of an annual Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon.
