Anchor Brewing Company
Whether you’re a casual drinker, home brewer, or suds aficionado, take a tour at Anchor Brewing Company for a fun blend of history, science, and passion for beer. Most tours include a historical overview of the brewery, a look at the production process—including a glimpse at the impressive copper brewhouse—and a generous tasting of any, and all, of Anchor’s 12 brews on draft.
The basics
Founded in 1896 by two German brewers, Anchor Brewing Company—a true San Francisco original—is America’s first and oldest craft brewery with roots dating all the way back to the Gold Rush. Using an all-malt mash, Anchor’s ales are made using traditional and natural brewing methods. And while all of its beers are unique, the brewery’s flagship Anchor Steam beer is its pride and joy. Though experts are still unsure where the “steam” nickname came from, many believe it refers to the historical way beer was brewed on the West Coast without ice, or the unique method of fermenting and cooling the beer on foggy San Francisco rooftops.
