Lombard Street

1000 block of Lombard Street, between Hyde and Leavenworth Streets, San Francisco, 94109

The Basics

Some San Francisco tours include a Lombard Street stop or drive-by, but most tour vehicles are prohibited. Opt for a more niche experience like an urban hiking tour or a Segway tour if you want to visit Lombard Street with a guide. From the top of the street, look toward North Beach for a view of Coit Tower and San Francisco Bay.

The Best Way To See San Fran
Honestly the best way to see the streets and sites of San Fran. Our Segway guide Nic was absolutely superb. Made us all feel very comfortable stepping onto the segway and had a fun and bubbly personality which made the tour enjoyable all the way round . If you want to see the all get major tourist attractions and have fun whilst doing it (and avoid walking those steep hills) book this tour you won’t regret it . Great fun. :-)

We had a nice time and it was fun however if you want to make the most out of it. You need to rent the Go Car all day. We ran into a detour and lost our way a little on the way back. The GPS should tell you how to get back on track. Other than that, I recommend it!

2HR Golden Gate Bridge and Lombard Loop GoCar Tour
Seeing everything from a go car rather than being in a bus or personal vehicle was so much fun. I loved that the historical facts were prompted by your gps location. Driving down Lombard Street was an awesome experience. Seeing the Golden Gate Bridge From the base of the bridge was fantastic.

We rented 2 cars for the 2 hour tour and had a great time. The cars we had were a bit beat up, but fun nonetheless. The guided GPS navigation and city highlights was amazing and really made the ride enjoyable. Recommend!

The audio tour was excellent as we knew where we needed to turn and heard interesting information of where we were at during the tour. This was a great way to see and learn about San Francisco.

Such a great way to cover a lot of the city! It was easy to drive and got us around quickly. The guided tour was perfect, we did the 2 hr tour and saw a lot, I wish we had time for the 3hr since it goes through golden gate park! I will definitely do this in other cities too! So so fun!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Lombard Street is a must-see for first-time visitors and families.

  • This is a residential area, so be respectful of the private homes on both sides of the street.

  • Wear shoes appropriate for walking down a steep grade.

  • Hyde and Leavenworth streets at either end of Lombard’s switchbacks are busy San Francisco roads; blocking traffic while trying to take pictures is not recommended.

How to Get There

For the most quintessentially San Francisco experience, take the Powell–Hyde cable car line, which runs north from Union Square, to the top of Lombard Street. Alternatively, Muni bus 45 stops at Leavenworth and Union streets, a few blocks away. If you want to drive down the one-way street in your own car, you must go west to east from Hyde to Leavenworth; take the switchbacks slowly.

When to Get There

Lombard is a public street and has no opening or closing hours. If you want to avoid catching too many other visitors in your photos, go as early in the day as you can. On busy summer days and weekends, the line of cars waiting to drive down can stretch for blocks, so try to be flexible if you’re visiting during this time.

Fisherman’s Wharf

The crooked portion of Lombard Street is about eight blocks from Fisherman’s Wharf, so it’s easy to explore both in the same day. If you visit Lombard Street first, it’s a downhill walk to the wharf. Enjoy views of San Francisco Bay and Alcatraz Island along the way.
