Muir Woods

Daily 8am–6pm
1 Muir Woods Road, Mill Valley, California, 94941

The Basics

If visiting independently, follow the raised boardwalk from the park entrance and you'll find yourself at the crossroads of the park's easy and popular hiking trails. Alternatively, visit Muir Woods on an organized tour departing from San Francisco. Both half- and full-day options are available and often include stops at the nearby Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, coastal Sausalito, or even Napa Valley wine country. Combined San Francisco city tours, bay cruises, and Muir Woods visits are also popular.

Fantastic tour. Ben was a knowledgeable tour guide. We had a beautiful day at Muir Woods (bring layers) and the three wineries, plus an excellent lunch at the Sunflower Cafe in the Sonoma square, with some chocolate for desert. On the way back he stopped to take photos by the Golden Gate.

Muir Woods & Sausalito Half-Day Tour (Return by Bus or Ferry from Sausalito)
Tour was great, with additional stops included. The highlight was the Muir Woods, were we had almost 2hrs for hiking. Then at Sausalito the Tour Guide recommended us a nice mexican restaurant for lunch (Copita) which was great. The only thing that I’d recommend to improve was to clean the Bus interior

Muir Woods and Sausalito Half Day Tour
The trip was relaxed. The driver was on time and gave lots of information during the trip. It was beautiful to walk in de Muir Woods. Later afternoon appeared to be a good time. Beautiful sunlight and not too busy. I took a ferry back myself, which was an amazing addition to the trip.

Muir Woods Tour of California Coastal Redwoods (Entrance fee included)
We were really pleased at the ease of the tour. If you are looking for a visit to the Muir Woods we would highly recommend. IF you are looking to do extensive trailing this may not be choice as it’s just shy of 2 hours to enter and time of departure. Our driver James was awesome! We took a few short stops prior. We chose staying in Sausalito which included a ferry ride back!

Muir Woods and Sausalito Small-Group Tour
Ben was a great host! He was personable, friendly and informative! I’m a hiker, so more time in Muir Woods would have been great! Personally, I thought the one hour in Sausalito was sufficient. We had time to walk through the shopping district and have a quick lunch. If you wanted to do some serious shopping, you would probably need more time.

Small Group Muir Woods with Napa & Sonoma Wine Tour
We had a small group, only 6, but can be up to 13-14 I think. Muir woods was great to see. Winery visit was very nice, especially the last one where we get to get a tour in the winery

How To Get There

Muir Woods is located just 12 miles (19 kilometers) north of San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge, making it an easy day trip from the city. It's possible to arrive by public transit, but the easiest way is by organized tour. When to Get There

Muir Woods is open from 8am to sunset during summer and closes at 5pm in winter. The site can become quite crowded, especially on weekends, so try to come midweek, early in the morning, or late in the afternoon to beat the crowds. Even at busy times, a short hike will get you out of the densest crowds and onto trails with giant redwoods and stunning vistas though.

Hiking and biking along the well-marked trails are the most popular things to do in Muir Woods, but visitors can also look out for several critters such as chipmunks, squirrels, owls, and—near the Redwood Creek—sea otters. Kids can also enjoy their visit to Muir Woods with a free-to-download, activity-packed Junior Ranger booklet which includes animal-spotting activities.
