Muir Woods

Daily 8am–6pm
1 Muir Woods Road, Mill Valley, California, 94941

The Basics

If visiting independently, follow the raised boardwalk from the park entrance and you'll find yourself at the crossroads of the park's easy and popular hiking trails. Alternatively, visit Muir Woods on an organized tour departing from San Francisco. Both half- and full-day options are available and often include stops at the nearby Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, coastal Sausalito, or even Napa Valley wine country. Combined San Francisco city tours, bay cruises, and Muir Woods visits are also popular.

Muir Woods & Sausalito Half-Day Tour (Return by Bus or Ferry from Sausalito)
The Muir woods is so beautiful and Serene. If I did it again I would do the first tour at 7:40am, stay is Sausalito longer, and take the ferry back to San Francisco. Sausalito was beautiful. Make sure to stop by Lamppert's for Ice cream

Small Group Half Day Muir Woods and Sausalito Morning Tour
This tour was fun, our guide was knowledgable and even stopped at an extra place cause it was so beautiful out and time allowed! Muir Woods was a nice destination and we had plenty of time for a hike and the gift shop/cafe. Sausalito is small and there’s not much to do but it had some restaurants and dessert places. Overall we had a good time!

Easy way to reach Muir Woods from SF

Muir Woods & Sausalito Half-Day Tour (Return by Bus or Ferry from Sausalito)
The tour was carefully organized with stops at the Golden Gate Bridge North Vista Point, Muir Woods, and Sausalito. Muir Woods are difficult to reach from SF unless you rent a car, so this is probably the easiest way. The stop in Sausalito was a bit too short but we could have returned by Uber/Lyft or taken the ferry. Overall, I highly recommend

Big Bus Muir Woods Tour
Muir woods is beautiful. A place you really must visit to experience. The paths were quite wet after a lot of rain, but mostly fine. The paths were difficult for a wheelchair user, some paths are great, other have been affected by tree roots and have become very uneven and difficult to manoeuvre

Muir Woods and Sausalito Half Day Tour
We enjoyed the tour and our guide was very nice and knowledgeable. The Muir Woods was definitely the highlight. We were tired by the time we got to Sausalito but still enjoyed the stroll and a quick bite before headed back to town.

How To Get There

Muir Woods is located just 12 miles (19 kilometers) north of San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge, making it an easy day trip from the city. It's possible to arrive by public transit, but the easiest way is by organized tour. If coming by car, drive north on Highway 101, continue north along Highway 1 (Shoreline Highway), then take the Panoramic Highway to Four Corners, where you'll turn left onto Muir Woods Road.

When to Get There

Muir Woods is open from 8am to sunset during summer and closes at 5pm in winter. The site can become quite crowded, especially on weekends, so try to come midweek, early in the morning, or late in the afternoon to beat the crowds. Even at busy times, a short hike will get you out of the densest crowds and onto trails with giant redwoods and stunning vistas though.

Show all

Hiking and biking along the well-marked trails are the most popular things to do in Muir Woods, but visitors can also look out for several critters such as chipmunks, squirrels, owls, and—near the Redwood Creek—sea otters. Kids can also enjoy their visit to Muir Woods with a free-to-download, activity-packed Junior Ranger booklet which includes animal-spotting activities.
