Old San Juan

5-11 Caleta de Las Monjas, Up on Hill Past San Juan Gate on the Paseo Del Morro Side, San Juan, Puerto Rico

The Basics

Old San Juan is a staple in city sightseeing tours, which offer an easy way to get an overview of the historic city and typically pass by other must-see sites such as La Fortaleza, the Capilla del Cristo, and the Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery. More tailored options include food tours and walking tours with a private guide, while Segway tours or cruises on San Jose Bay are also popular alternatives in San Juan.

Old San Juan Walking Tour
We got so much more from this tour than we ever expected. It was three hours and saw all of Old San Juan. Our tour guide, David, is incredibly knowledgeable. He invited questions from the group and knew answers to all of them. You can tell he loves his city, cleaning up trash as we walked. Couldn't have asked for a better experience. Would absolutely recommend this to anyone coming to San Juan and want to learn the history.

San Juan Mini Boats
so much fun. legit get to drive your own little boat around the ocean/bay and it’s so much fun. the guides are in their own little boats in front and behind you for safety, but far out. so you’re able to steer freely it’s so fun! they even stopped on the shore of old san juan and let us jump in the water and cool off.

Old San Juan Segway PT tour 10:30am and 1pm or Segway Kickscooter Tour 4pm
This segway tour is more about the history of PR versus the segway ride & beach views. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the history, impact to the island and the people of PR, including the purpose of many monuments of Old San Juan. He gave us time to adjust to the segways before we left, great safety briefing and practice included. This is definitely a great way to get a quick overview of the area and ask any questions about the PR's history.

Old San Juan Walking Tour
Our guide David expertly steered us through all the high points and hidden gems of Old San Juan, mixing his intimate knowledge with dry humor. He kept the tour moving, found a dry spot during a sudden shower, and was constantly looking out for our safety. Gracias David!

Old San Juan Harbor Sailing Tour
Old San Juan Harbor Sailing Tour- "Amazing Grace" was an amazing sailing tour. The guides were kind, informative with safety measures, knowledgeable about the island of Puerto Rico. It was a nice smooth cruise. Saw some major landmarks around the island from a water view. Thanks Amazing Grace Team!

Old San Juan City Walking Tour
Leo was an excellent tour guide. Not only did he give a ton of information about Old San Juan, from the past 500 years and into present concerns, but he was also able to integrate the stories of how Puerto Rico interacted with the countries many of the people in the group were from. Leo was incredibly kind and open to any questions asked, and even led groups of people to restaurants/stores they wanted to go to after the tour. A must try if you're in the area!!

Sunset Harbor Boat Ride in San Juan
Great sunset cruise around San Juan. Guide explained some of San Juan history and pointed out historical sites from the water. Sodas, beer, or water were available. Along with a small sandwich, pretzel chips, cheese, and grapes. Views of Old San Juan and El Morro were spectacular.

Our guide Bryant was great! He was energetic, friendly, and very knowledgeable of the history of Old San Juan. He made sure everyone on the tour was comfortable and having a great experience. I’m 6 months pregnant and was able to keep up without a problem. I would recommend this tour.

Sunset Harbor Boat Ride in San Juan
A perfect cruise for large or small group. We had a group of 14 (plus two kids under 3) we were suspicious that we weren’t going to fit on the boat but we fit with room (even with a full tour). We had excellent weather and a beautiful sunset. Had a great time. Great guide. We learn a lot of history and about the city (specifically old San Juan). Would absolutely do this with a family or with a small group.

How to Get There

Old San Juan is located on an islet, attached to the mainland of Puerto Rico by three bridges. If you’re coming from the mainland or the airport, book an airport transfer or drive over the bridges. Those arriving as Caribbean cruise ship passengers will likely dock at one of the many cruise ship piers in the neighborhood. Once in Old San Juan, getting around the area is easy by foot or taxi, and a free, accessible trolley system also runs through the area.

When to Get There

Old San Juan is most popular during winter and summer, when vacationers flock to this classic Caribbean destination. This is especially true for visitors from the United States who can travel to and from Puerto Rico without a passport. If planning a spring trip, expect temperatures hovering around 80°F (26°C) and diminished crowds.

Other San Juan Neighborhoods

Old San Juan is perhaps the best-known of Puerto Rico's San Juan neighborhoods, but it's far from the only one. Venture slightly farther afield to upscale Miramar, home to two marinas; make your way to Condado, known for beachside condos; or stop in at Ocean Park, where you'll find some overlooked but beautiful beaches.
