Hondarribia

Hondarribia, Spain

The Basics

More compact and manageable than its popular neighbor, San Sebastián, Hondarribia offers many attractions:xa0 a sandy beach at Txingudi Bay, an old fisherman’s quarter where antique houses sport colorfully painted shutters and flower-filled balconies, and a fortified medieval quarter with a hilltop castle and a labyrinth of cobbled lanes. Foodies come here for the celebrated epicurean delights served in eateries ranging from casual to sleek to the Michelin-starred.

Stay the night, or visit Hondarribia on a day-trip from San Sebastián or Bilbao. Most tours combine travel by van and boat to explore the French coast, dipping into quaint towns such as Hendaye and Saint Jean De Luz before encountering the bohemian glam of Biarritz.

Great day trip!
This was a perfect day trip to explore the Basque Country from Donostia. Miguel did a great job explaining the fascinating history of the area. Loved the drive through the mountains too!

Mikel was a wonderful, engaging guide. Proud of his heritage, knowledgeable, and interested in sharing the jewels of Basque country with us. The scenery in the area is heavenly and the day was wonderful. Would definitely recommend this to others. (Be ready to walk up and down in small town streets with cobble stones).

One of the best tours ever! Beautiful scenery quaint villages and interesting history of this part of the basque region. The group size of 6 allowed everyone to ask our fabulous guide Felix Jauregi any questions and spoke to us individually if we missed something taking pictures. his English was easily understandable. The church in Hondaribia was unique in that the stained glass represented scenes of historic events in the area.

Great tour to be able to see a few towns near San Sebastián without having to rent a car. The tour guide (Piero) was great and shared information with us that I think I wouldn’t missed out on without having a guide.

Andoni gave us a great tour despite the weather, we spent a lot of time in Biarritz where there was some stunning views. There was lots of talking and Andoni was very knowledgeable about the area, the history, the people and the culture. The walk around Hondarrabia was very good, with some beautiful streets and buildings, it struck me as a real basque village away from the cities and tourist destinations. I would recommend this tour to anyone visiting the area

What a wonderful tour with a small group. Though it wasn't a long drive or too far from San Sebastian, we were shown charming little towns and beautiful landscapes, and learned a lot about the history and culture of Basque country. We had a great guide who expertly explained everything in Spanish and English and was knowledgable and professional when answering questions we had.

Hop over to French Basque Country

Just across the Bidasoa river estuary is the French basque beachtown of Hendaye. From Hondarribia, take a ferry, hike (about 1.5 hours), or bike (30 minutes) over the Spanish/French border. Here, you’ll find a beautiful 2-mile (3-kilometer) beach heaven for watersports including surfing, coastal walking trails to see the otherworldly flysch rock formations, and the fabulous neo-Gothic Château Abbadia.
