Ways to visit Montalcino Fortress (Fortezza di Montalcino)

Built in 1361, Montalcino’s dramatic 5-sided fortress encloses a cobbled courtyard and chapel, and is topped by crenelated ramparts and soaring towers. Explore the fortress on a wine tour from Florence, Rome, or Siena: take in the views over the vineyards and olive groves of the Val d’Orcia and sit down for a tasting of local Brunello wines in the cellar wine shop. Most wine-tasting day trips stop in a number of picturesque villages that dot Tuscany’s wine country—including Montepulciano, Pienza, and San Gimignano—and include lunch featuring Tuscany’s famed cuisine.

From Florence: Valdorcia Wine tour, Brunello Montalcino , Pienza n Montepulciano
We had a fantastic wine tasting experience with our driver Luca! He spoke perfect English and was so kind. Our stops were fairly quick but he tried to give us photo ops and lots of information/history. The wine was delicious and the food accompanying good as well! Lunch was on a beautiful terrace with a view of the Tuscany countryside…simple pasta but very delicious! Loved the smaller group size and the van was comfortable.

From Florence: Valdorcia Wine tour, Brunello Montalcino , Pienza n Montepulciano
Although I thought the tour was nice .. I would have liked more time in Pienza to maybe walk around and shop and the same in montepulciano . The guide Ricardo was personable but it was hard to hear in the vehicle in the Back seat .. a microphone would be smart addition so everyone could hear the commentary as we were traveling . Especially since travel is such a big portion of the tour . He was a lovely gentleman .

We had a rainy day, but the tour was very enjoyable. Marco did a great job being our guide for the day. All 3 vineyards were very nice. The lunch at the 2nd vineyard was excellent. It was a great way to spend the day.

Small-Group Brunello di Montalcino Wine-Tasting Trip from Siena
Excellent day with great tasting and the food at the second vineyard was excellent. Day perhaps prolonged by visit to the abbey which was good but made the final vineyard a bit of a haze. The day was nearly a calamity with a mix up over the pick-up but overall a great day. Thanks to Juliana.

San Gimignano, Chianti, and Montalcino Day Trip from Siena
The first two wine tastings were excellent. The last one that was supposed to feature Brunello; only had us sample one Brunello and it was a tiny sample. Not ideal. Our driver was a nice fellow but he was a driver, not a guide. 4 stars is about right but no more.

The driver Maximilian was very kind. The two wineries were excellent, especially the 2nd one. Both places had wonderful wine. The views from the 2nd winery were what you see in pictures. Absolutely beautiful!

Half-Day Brunello di Montalcino Wine Tour from Siena
The 2 wineries were small intimate out of the way, and unique, and the wine was fabulous! I also loved the hill town, Montalcino. I appreciated our guide who was friendly and knowledgeable.

When to visit Montalcino Fortress (Fortezza di Montalcino)

One of the biggest draws of the Fortezza di Montalcino is the views over the surrounding countryside, particularly beautiful in spring and fall. Otherwise, choose a clear, mild day so you can enjoy visiting the outdoor ramparts and towers.

The Long History of Montalcino’s Fortress

In the Middle Ages, Montalcino was an important town thanks to its proximity to the Via Francigena pilgrimage route between France and Rome, but after falling under the control of the Republic of Siena, the town was often embroiled in skirmishes over territory with Florence. Montalcino was the last Tuscan town to hold out against the might of the Medicis: Siena fell in 1555 and Montalcino was subjected to a four-year siege, though the fortress never fell to Florentine troops. Cosimo I added its imposing ramparts in 1571, but the Fortezza lost its military significance soon after; over the years it housed a community of Benedictine monks but gradually fell into disrepair before restorations took place in the 1940s.
