From the height of summer to the depths of winter, St. Moritz remains an attractive destination for lovers of the great outdoors. With rugged hiking trails and sweeping ski slopes to explore, here are a few ways to enjoy St. Moritz to the full.

Snow Sports
The scenic ski resort of Bivio lies only 13 miles (21 kilometers) to the east of St. Moritz in the canton of Graubünden, and makes an ideal day trip for visitors keen to see other corners of the Swiss Alps. Although home to only four lifts, the resort boasts an impressive 3,014 feet (919 meters) of vertical descent alongside eight miles (12 kilometers) of cross-country ski trails.

Scenic Train Rides
The Bernina Express is a rail line running through St. Moritz to Tirano, Italy, taking in pretty bridges, dense forests, high mountain passes, and spectacular views over the Swiss Alps. Take a seat aboard the train and chug effortlessly through rural Switzerland. Along the way, admire sites including the town of Chur, Lej Nair lake, the Plessur River, and the lush hillsides of the Poschiavo Valley.

Hiking
When spring springs and the snow recedes, the hills around St. Moritz and the Engadin valley reveal rugged trails ideal for adventure. With terrain suited to all levels of fitness, hiking is one of the region’s most popular outdoor activities. Up top, at altitude, mountain railways and gondolas offer access to three of the highest peaks in Europe—the Corvatsch, the Piz Nair, and the Diavolezza. Lower down the valley, hikers can follow winding trails past lush pastures, dense forests, and shimmering Alpine lakes.
