Mýrdalsjökull Glacier

Vík í Mýrdal, South Iceland

The Basics

With unstable ice, crevasses, and changeable weather conditions, the Myrdalsjokull Glacier can be dangerous to explore solo. For these reasons, most visitors go as part of an organized guided tour from Vik or Reykjavik. Many glacier experiences take place on Solheimajokull glacier, an easy-to-access section of the larger Myrdalsjokull Glacier.

Choose between Super Jeep tours, snowmobiling excursions, guided glacier hikes, and ice climb adventures that take place on the vast ice cap, or quad bike rides around the base of the glacier. Longer tours typically incorporate other south coast attractions, such as Eldhraun lava field, the town of Vik, Skaftafell National Park, the black-sand Reynisfjara beach, and Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls.

Exceeded expectations!
This really exceeded my expectations. I will say that you are a bit at the mercy of the other people in your group and we got lucky with a crew that was very comfortable going fast. I had seen other reviews where things went a bit slower and I can see how that’s disappointing. We were able to ride around for a while and the top of the glacier. It was pretty awesome. This ended up being one of the biggest highlights of my trip to Iceland.

We lucked out. It was a beautiful sunny day with little wind which is unique up on the glacier. The guides were excellent and offered great restaurant recommendations for after our journey. It was the highlight of our trip to Iceland.

Highly recommend - especially for thrill seekers. We were really lucky with the weather and views were amazing. Think there should be more initial instructions, especially about how to manoveure the tricky start.

Fantastic views and a sunny day once we got up on the glacier!!! One thing about the weather around Vik—it can change in a matter of minutes!!!! We had rain on the rocky trip to the snowmobiling. The suits and boots provided keep you warm and dry no matter what. Everyone in our group was good and so we went pretty fast!! We also just traded drivers rather than paying extra for our own snowmobiles..

We had a good time. Felt very safe. The tour could have/should have been longer but we had some slower people in the group and I think the weather was coming in.

Snowmobiling Experience on Mýrdalsjökull Glacier
Everything about this trip was amazing. The guides. The journey up to the snowmobiles. The weather was on our side too and riding the snowmobile was epic. Not forgetting the chance to stand on a glacier covering an active volcano. Strongly recommend. Worth every penny and ticked off several of my bucket list items in one hit 😀

Lukas was our guide and did a great job. The only down part was that we wanted to go again as soon as it was over. Don’t miss this!

Snowmobiling Experience on Mýrdalsjökull Glacier
What a great trip-possibly the highlight of our trip to Iceland. We had Lukas as our guide- he was great and was really informative when we stopped each time. We were so lucky with the weather-we were above the clouds and the scenery was stunning. The glacier was huge so we were able to go really fast! The equipment we were provided with was of really good quality. A great day and one we’ll never forget!
