Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias
The Basics
Multiple trails provide access to Mariposa Grove, with loop options ranging from 0.3 miles (0.5 kilometers) to 7 miles (11.3 kilometers). Highlights include the Bachelor and Three Graces, a quartet of sequoias with massive, intertwining roots; the Grizzly Giant, the grove’s oldest and largest tree with a base nearly 30 feet (9 meters) across; the California Tunnel Tree, the only living sequoia in Yosemite with a man-made tunnel drilled through it; and the Fallen Monarch, a massive fallen tree nearly 15 feet (4.6 meters) in diameter.
You can visit Mariposa Grove independently or see it on a Yosemite day trip from San Francisco. It’s also possible to visit on a multi-day California coast tour from Los Angeles.

Mariposa Grove is a must-see for first-time visitors to Yosemite.
Wear comfortable shoes for exploring the trails, and remember to bring sun protection and plenty of water.
Restrooms are located at the Mariposa Grove Welcome Plaza and Arrival Area, near the Mariposa Grove Cabin.
How to Get There
Mariposa Grove is located within Yosemite National Park, roughly five hours from San Francisco by road. Parking is limited in the Mariposa Grove parking lot, especially during summer. For easiest access, catch one of the free seasonal shuttle buses that run through the park.

When to Get There
Summer is the most popular time to visit Mariposa Grove, when the weather is typically hot and sunny. During this season, opt for an early morning visit to avoid the worst crowds. Spring is a good time to visit, when wildflowers are blooming and there are fewer visitors. The Mariposa Grove Road is typically closed to cars in winter, but all trails remain open for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
Trail Options in Mariposa Grove
Big Trees Loop is the shortest option at 0.3 miles (0.5 kilometers) and allows you to see the Fallen Monarch tree. Grizzly Giant Loop clocks in at around 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) and allows you to see the Fallen Monarch, Bachelor and Three Graces, Grizzly Giant, and California Tunnel Tree. Opt for the 6.5-mile (10.5-kilometer) Guardians Loop or Mariposa Grove Trail to see parts of the upper grove.
