Yosemite Valley

Yosemite Valley, Yosemite National Park, California

The Basics

Head to the Yosemite Valley to enjoy ranger-led hikes, nature talks, and evening star programs. Book a guided tour to ensure that you see all the top sights; opt for guided hiking, backpacking, or camping adventure; or take a photography class.

There are also tours to Yosemite from San Francisco, San Jose, Los Angeles, and Lake Tahoe. These run anywhere from half-day trips to week-long tours, and many combine a trip to the Yosemite Valley with stops at other nearby attractions, such as the giant sequoias and Alcatraz. For a bird’s-eye view of the valley, check out a flightseeing tour.

A day out with Alberto
Excellent tour, good and informative guide, probably should do the trip in summer as well. Long day with long drives there and back, some very scenic. Well worth it though. Not much wildlife seen hence you should probably go in summer too.

Great trip, Yosemite Valley was amazing to see and Steven our driver was very helpful at getting good photos and knew the best places to stop. One tip - in winter bring hiking boots if possible for the sequoia part.

Small-Group Yosemite Day Tour from San Francisco
What a fabulous experience. Great guide James, made the trip something to remember. Great playlist for the time spent on the bus. Regular stops for photo opportunities. Just the right amount of commentary with informative facts. The time to yourself to explore as you want was terrific, option to catch a free bus around the park or some short walks in the area. Highly recommend this tour.

Small Group Yosemite and Giant Sequoias Day Trip from San Francisco
Awesome day tour. It is a long day but that’s expected given how far Yosemite is from San Francisco. Steven was an excellent guide, and went above and beyond. We were unable to visit the Sequoias due to weather (it was winter) but it was still a really great day and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, marvelling at all the natural beauty of the park.

When to Get There

Peak tourist season at Yosemite Valley runs from early June through the end of August, so visit in the spring or fall if you want to avoid the largest crowds. The valley is at its most dramatic in late spring, when the waterfalls are at their fullest. Whenever you choose to visit, make sure to start your days early; sunrise is one of the best times to capture photos of the iconic sights.

Best Yosemite Valley Day Hikes

If you only have time for one hike in Yosemite Valley, take the Mist Trail to Vernal and Nevada Falls. If you have more time, hike to Half Dome and climb to the summit with the help of handrails embedded into the rock. The 14- to 16-mile (22- to 26-kilometer) round-trip hike is strenuous in spots, but it's well worth it for the fantastic panoramic views of Yosemite Valley and the High Sierra.
