Start your tour of Zaragoza at the central Plaza España or Plaza del Pilar, from where it’s a short walk to top landmarks like the Basilica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar (Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar), the La Seo Cathedral and the Ayuntamiento (City Hall), then pay a visit to the magnificent Aljafería Palace, one of Spain’s most exquisite Islamic buildings, or explore the city’s many museums. On the banks of the Ebro, Zaragoza’s colossal cathedral marks the spot that, according to tradition, Mary appeared to St. James in AD 40. Since then, the site has hosted many religious structures, with major restorations in the 12th, 15th, and 17th centuries. Today, the church is one of Spain’s most significant cultural attractions.
