Hornitos s/n, Centro, Acapulco, 39300

The Basics

It’s impossible to miss the Fort of San Diego, and many guided tours of Acapulco include a stop here. Its stone fortifications stretch across the strategically important point at the end of Playa Hornos, where it guarded the deep natural port that today hosts enormous cruise ships. Its five turret-topped stone arms once protected galleons that connected the Americas to Asian ports. Today, they house the Acapulco Historical Museum, with objects from that era through the Mexican War of Independence and good signage in Spanish and English. On-site guides are available, although you may want to call ahead first to make sure.

They can do anything
We had a wonderful tour as things start to open up. We really enjoyed the attractions and the special stops, since it was just the two of us that booked. We were then given a challenge that turned into an adventure. The worst city wide traffic jam our guide had ever seen. So we got to see parts of the city that no tourist gets to enjoy. We saw how the people handle not moving for 30 minutes in traffic. We were treated to a once in a lifetime experiences complete with stories of growing up in Acapulco. These guys can handle everything.

6Hr Walking Tour San Diego Fort Museum Cliff Divers Zocalo
The Ft. San Diego was closed due to covid but our two tour guides made up for it by taking us up into some areas of town that many tourists don't see including showing us Diego Riveres House. Beautiful vista views. Took us to Centro Market and walked us through parts of it, to the main plaza and church and different areas of interest. And of course the Cliff Divers show was spectacular! Our guides both were very knowledgeable on Mexican history also! Very good lunch and nice restaurant on the beach. My son and I both enjoyed our tour very much.

Since navigating the roads and dealing with Acapulco’s heavy traffic can be frustrating, the easiest way to visit the Fort of San Diego is as part of a guided tour with hotel pickup and drop-off. Otherwise, take the bus (there is a bus stop in front of the fort) or grab a cab, which are readily available.

When to Get There

To beat the afternoon heat, you should plan to explore the Fort of San Diego in the morning hours, though the museum’s air-conditioned rooms offer relief from the sun. Overall, Acapulco’s peak season is in the winter months, from December to March, so expect the biggest crowds then.
