The Basics

Mt. Lofty Summit is free to enter, although there is a small charge for parking. Visit on a day trip or half-day trip from Adelaide, on an Adelaide city tour, or as part of a longer journey, such as the epic road trip that links Melbourne and Adelaide. Combine the summit with a pilgrimage to the koalas at Cleland Wildlife Park, the historic German settlement of Hahndorf, a Murray River cruise, or Adelaide Hills wineries. Get active on guided or self-guided hiking trips along the Heysen Trail, to Waterfall Gully, or to Cleland Wildlife Park, or ride a mountain bike downhill from the summit to the city.

Cleland Wildlife Park Experience - from Adelaide including Mt Lofty Summit
The tour was a very simple one just on the outskirts of Adelaide. Saw the city and area from a great vantage point. A fun stop at Cleland wildlife park. We got to hold Koalas and got to be up close to Kangaroos and many other animals.

Cleland Wildlife Park Experience - from Adelaide including Mt Lofty Summit
Great tour! Great Experience! Be sure to try and reserve your Koala Hold tickets before your tour. As far in advance as possible. They sold out the day I went so I had to settle for the Koala Close Up experience that comes with the tour. The Cleland Wildlife Park experience is great for a leisurely day. Bring a picnic if you'd like or enjoy the food sold at the cafe. Either way, you'll enjoy yourself.

Great for any age

Mount Lofty Descent Bike Tour from Adelaide
This tour was a great escape from the city but was such a short distance away. Great for all ages . I took my 23 year old son. He, of course, was at a much higher level of mountain bike riding than me, but I kept up pretty easily. There were only a couple of tricky spots where I got off and walked but I’d say it’s a fine trail for beginners. About a third of the way down we stopped at a wildlife park and had animal encounters and some morning tea. Back on the trail we got a great surprise bonus by seeing a koala in the wild! We ended the trip by riding all the way back to our hotel. It was a nice ride, going through some residential areas and parks, and the short ride in the city wasn’t bad or difficult. I’d definitely recommend it!

An enjoyable but challenging hike to Mt Lofty

Waterfall Gully to Mt Lofty Guided Hike
Tour guide Mike was very friendly cooperative and gave good advice at the start of the hike location regarding routes and expected times which turned out to be fairly accurate. The first part of the hike was pleasant in the cool weather visiting the flowing first and second falls and passing through interesting Gully vegatation After this the steep climb commenced and apart from a few slight downhill and flatter stretches continued all the way to the summit. Other points of interest were Wilson's Bog a forest of many trees Mt Lofty Cottage and the city and suburban and ocean views from the summit After spending about 25 minutes at the summit the return journey although not requiring so much energy still required aj lot if care in the steep downhill sections. An early start is certainly a good recommendation as attempting the ascent in warm weather is not a good idea especially for those in the older age groups. My guide generously offered to take me all the way home but I did not accept his offer as I was not as exausted as he thought I was.
