This is Guatemala’s top trekking route! 5 days of “out there”trekking across the remote departments of Quiche and Huehuetenango. This trek traverses areas only accessible by foot. We’ll walk through small, seemingly forgotten Mayan villages of people that were displaced by nearly 35 years of civil war. Along the way we stay in small community run hostels and/or hotels and break bread with local families. Much of the route is above 10,000 ft. across the Guatemalan altiplano. We offer 2 options along this classic route; both treks start in the Ixil Mayan stronghold of Nebaj and finish in the remote mountain village of Todos Santos, famous for its “Day of the Dead” festivities. On our hut to hut option we rely each night on the hospitality of the local communities we pass through. We will spend 4 nights in community hostals that are set up across the highlands. We’ll sit around the hearth of a local family and break bread with a local family.

Atitlan is known for the stunning views of its 3 Volcanoes mixed with the natural freshness of the lake but most travelers don´t know that this Lake holds centuries of mysticism, Mayan history, and culture. During this tour, you will not only visit the most popular places on the lake such as Panajachel but you will also have direct contact with the inhabitants of towns not so well known but full of culture and beauty. Ancient Trade Routes of the Maya This is Guatemalan trekking at its best. The Mayan Highlands Trail is a 3 day trek following the ancient Mayan trade routes that once connected the Mayan civilizations of Lake Atitlan to those of Quetzaltenango. Much of this walk traverses above 3000 meters, providing phenomenal views of 15 different Guatemalan volcanoes. We will watch the sunset over Lake Atitlan, look out to the volcanoes on the Mexican Border, and enjoy our culturally rich hike from start to finish. This 3-day/2-night hike brings you up the slopes of beautiful Volcan Acatenango to our private campsite – bench-cut into the side of this towering mountain. From here we enjoy our camp meals, incredible views, and plenty of room to stretch out. In camp there we will have ample time to appreciate the sights and sounds of nearby Volcan Fuego’s violent volcano eruptions. We continue our hike across the saddle and up Volcan Fuego the next morning, where we will enjoy lunch beneath Fuego’s smoldering caldera. After a return hike in the afternoon, we enjoy another evening at camp with fresh food and a warm fire. On the morning of the 3rd day, our group will summit Acatenango’s peak (3,975m/12,720ft - the third highest volcano in Guatemala), taking in panoramic views from atop the summit. Finally, we will descend back down through a myriad of microclimates to return to Antigua by early afternoon.
