The Basics

The Roman Baths are the headline attraction in Bath, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Being just 115 miles (185 kilometers) from central London and within day-tripping distance of Oxford, Brighton, Bournemouth, and Southampton, Bath is a very popular day-tour destination for visitors to South England.

Organized day tours often combine a trip to Bath and the Roman Baths with a visit to the prehistoric Stonehenge monument, the picturesque Cotswolds village of Lacock, Windsor Castle, or the cathedral town of Salisbury. If you want to begin your tour in Bath itself, try a guided walking tour of the Georgian city that includes other top attractions such as the Royal Crescent, the Circus, and Gothic Bath Abbey. Hop-on hop-off tour buses also stop at the Roman Baths.

Really informative walking tour
Charlotte was a wonderful guide, with great knowledge, and the ability to get to the point straight away. The Roman Baths, with great audio commentary, is well worth the visit.

Roman Baths and Bath City Walking Tour
Loved our walking tour with Charlotte - she was super energetic and shared fun stories and bits of history along the way. Meeting spot was convenient. Our tour tickets included entry to the Roman Baths- the baths are no longer in use, however, have been converted into a museum with artifacts and exhibits on display to show what life may have been like back then. There is an accompanying audioguide so you can visit the museum at your own pace.

Cameron did a great job leading us through the streets of Bath! We enjoyed his tales and commentary. I would have liked to have heard more information about different theaters, museums, and sites to explore while in Bath. The Roman Baths themselves were excellent!

Stonehenge and Bath Day Trip from London with Optional Roman Baths Visit
Great tour. The guide and driver were professional and knowledgeable. The driver was very safe as well. The guide could have given more info about what to do in Bath If you didn’t get the Bath Ticket, but I researched in advance and have been there before so I knew. Wish she would have let us know about where to find the charging port too.

Our driver was wonderful! We would highly recommend him. We were not happy with our experience with Viator, in that we expected a private tour, not just a car service. We were not told that all entry fees were not included in the pricey trip.

Rachael our tour guide was lovely, very informative and knows her stuff. She gave us a good flavour of Bath. We had a really enjoyable couple of hours. Didn't realise that we would be going around the Roman Baths on our own with an Audio guide but it was fascinating anyway

Katrina was quite knowledgeable about both Stonehenge and Bath. She shared historical facts and landmarks. She was nice and a pleasure to travel with. I highly recommend LJ Hugs in Bath - had some delicious creole chicken and rice!

Even Evans tours was fantastic. The tour guide Simon was very knowledgable, with a hint of English humour. He really lightened the history of the area. I recommend adding the optional Roman Baths Visit as it was absolutely stunning and a real wonder to walk around. Definitely try the pasties too!

Roman Baths and Bath City Walking Tour
Tour guide was Cameron, 90 minutes tour. very friendly and knowledgable. Had some interesting pieces of trivia to share. We were shown the best parts of the town in my opinion and we stopped for pictures along the way. Quite a fun experience. Only feedback would be for the guide to be a little more slow while talking.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The hot water that flows throughout the Roman Baths complex, via the Sacred Spring, is untreated, hence bathing is not allowed.

  • Wear sturdy shoes as the stone floors are uneven.

  • Audio guides are provided, and free tours take place hourly.

  • The complex is below street level, and features narrow walkways that may trigger claustrophobia.

When to Get There

The Roman Baths are the city’s showpiece attraction and, as such, draw big crowds, particularly during July and August weekends. If you are visiting at this time, arrive before 10am or during the evening. In summer, it’s possible to visit at night, when the baths are lit by torches.

Drinking the Thermal Waters

Within the same complex as the Roman Baths is the elaborate Pump Room, a lavish 18th-century construction that served as a socializing spot for Bath’s Georgian elite. The Pump Room now houses a restaurant as well as the King’s Spa fountain, which spouts mineral water directly from the springs. Visitors can try the warm thermal waters, which are said to have curative properties. Be warned: The sulfur-tinged flavor is not to everyone’s taste.
