The Basics

Lamanai consists of ceremonial pyramids, open-air plazas, a ball court, and other remnants of an ancient Maya civilization. Most tours of the archaeological complex start at the on-site museum to learn about the history of the Maya civilization before heading to the Jaguar Temple, part of which is carved into the shape of the jungle cat. Squint hard enough and you might be able to spot it.

Next is the High Temple, which rises above the treetops and offers panoramic views from its summit. Finally, visit the Mask Temple, which is adorned with a 13-foot (4-meter) limestone mask of an ancient Maya king. Much of Lamanai still remains concealed under dense jungle growth, with the restoration and evacuation of the site focused on these three large structures.

Lamanai Temple
This tour exceeded expectations. Our guide, Coconut Pete, was amazing at spotting animals along the boat route and providing detailed information about Lamanai. I has so many questions about this site and he throughly answered all of them. The ruins were stunning and it felt as if we had the site to our small group. The food was delicious too! I cannot recommend this tour enough!

Lamanai Temple
Really enjoyed the boat ride up the river. So beautiful. The Lamanai temple sites were amazing. Wish we knew the high tower was under construction and would not be able to be climbed. The lunch was ok. Guides were great and a lot of fun! Thank you!

Lamanai Temple
We LOVED our tour guide, Coconut Pete! He knew a lot about the birds and other animals that we saw on the boat ride and pointed out things we would not have noticed otherwise. Then once we got to the temples, he was super knowledgeable of the history there. And lunch was even tasty! We saw a couple toucans, some monkeys, some raccoon relatives that I forget the name of, and a million birds. It was such an incredibly fun day that we’ll always remember. Oh and lunch was even tasty!

Great trip! If you don’t see these ruins, you miss a whole aspect of Belize. Julian was a great guide & the ruins are impressive. Lunch delicious! This tour operator was very accommodating with us, as we had missed air connections coming in, and they worked it out so we could go. Thanks!

Fantastic tour to Lamanai. Led by a small team with knowledgeable and friendly guides to a great site. Driver picked us up at Belize city water taxi dock to accommodate our travel plans. Even lunch was delicious and far exceeded what’s typical on similar tours.

Lamanai Temples, River Cruise, Bird Watching and Monkeys from Belize City
Our river and ruins guide Amir was an eagle-eyed bird finder both on the river and walking through Lamanai, and also knew a lot about jungle plants and their local uses. This really enriched the tour.

Lamanai Mayan Ruins, River & Wildlife Adventure
The driver, Omar was hilarious, pointing out local culture along the way, and sharing stories that made the drive more enjoyable. Once we reached the boat, the guide there was amazing, stopping along the way to point out all sorts of birds, bats and iguanas! Great trip with awesome guides!!

Lamanai and Scenic Boat Ride Along the New River Lagoon
The moment we met our delightful driver, the General, there was no doubt that our day was going to be everything we anticipated and more. We appreciate him and the extraordinary tour staff for making this a most surreal experience - one we will talk about often and encourage others to book. Highly recommended!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Nature lovers will enjoy spotting exotic birds and howler monkeys at the archaeological site.

  • The High Temple features a wooden staircase that winds around the back of the pyramid, making it easier to climb to the top.

  • Many tours combine a trip to the ruins with a riverboat ride along New River, providing more opportunities to spot local wildlife.

How to Get There

From Belize City, you can hop a bus from the local station to Orange Walk. From there, you’ll need to grab a taxi because Lamanai is located about 30 miles (48 kilometers) from the town of Orange Walk. An easier option: Tours from Belize City offer transportation directly to the site or to the New River in Orange Walk, where you’ll take an hourlong boat ride up to Lamanai.

When to Get There

Lamanai is open from 8am to 5pm daily. When cruise ships dock in Belize City, Lamanai can get crowded, so check the schedule and plan accordingly if your dates are flexible. Keep in mind that the rainy season (typically from June to November) may interfere with the riverboat ride. Late November to mid-April is dry season in Belize, and that’s when you’ll experience the most pleasant weather.

Altun Ha

Another Maya archaeological site in Belize, Altun Ha is located a little more than two hours away from Lamanai and is divided into Plaza A and Plaza B. In Plaza B, the Temple of Masonry Altar is believed to have been the main religious center of the civilization. It’s also home to a giant piece of jade carved into the shape of the head of the Maya sun god Kinich Ahau.
