The Basics

Xunantunich is dominated by the 130-foot-tall (40-meter-tall) El Castillo. At the top, you’ll have a fantastic view across the jungle canopy, the other ruins, and the Guatemalan border. While there, learn about the history of the Maya inhabitants, the excavations, and the environment on the site. Day trips to Xunantunich often combine a visit to the ruins with cave tubing, horseback riding, or other activities.

Perfect combo
This was a great tour with Elio. Xunantunich was a very interesting Mayan site, different than Tikal. Then the cave tubing was a great way to end the day. Highly recommended! We even got to explore the cenote.

Xunantunich Day Trip from San Ignacio
We had a great tour of the Xunantunich grounds. Our tour guide was knowledgeable, personable, and great about pointing out wildlife. Plus lunch was delicious! Tubing on a hot day after Xunantunich was refreshing and peaceful. I had a little trouble keeping up with the other two on the water and I wish the guide had waited for me a bit more, but he was usually always in sight at least. A very good experience over all.

Full-Day ATM Cave and Xunantunich Maya Temple Combo
Dimas was our driver for the day and our Xunantunich tour guide A+. Hector was our ATM Cave tour guide. You seriously need to ask for this duo if you decide to go on this tour! The best guides we’ve ever had. It is a strenuous day, so be prepared to be tired and sore at the end of it. Out guides were the best, and very accommodating for our slower members. A+++

We had an excellent guide (Edgar) who was very knowagable and entertaining. The ruins were great and very interesting. I am in my 70's and was able to keep up with the activities. Edgar picked us up at our resort and drove us everywhere. Very stress free.

Xunantunich and Cave Tubing Combo Tour from San Ignacio
This was such a fun day. My mom (65), sister (40), and I (42), had an amazing day with Elio. He was a great guide full of knowledge and stories. He really brought the ruins and the cave to life for us. Getting off our tubes to go through the crystal caves was absolutely incredible. Pictures can't do it justice, you'll need to see it for yourself!

Xunantunich and Cahal Pech from San Ignacio
Ellio, our guide, was incredibly funny and knowledgeable. He made the whole experience fantastic. He helped us get some amazing pictures - which is nice otherwise it’d all be selfies and you’d miss how big the ruins are.

Xunantunich Riding tour
We had the best time. We learn a tremendous amount from our guide Eleo and loved the education in the Mayan culture. The ride though farm land, and along the river was scenic and a great way to see the countryside. We saw monkeys and tucans too. Highly recommend the ride.

How to Get There

As Xunantunich usually closes around 4pm, get an early start on your roughly 3-hour trip from Belize City. The easiest way to get there on your own is by bus—which makes requested stops only, so inform your driver where you’re headed. Next, ride the free ferry across the river, then walk about a mile (1.6 kilometers) to the site. Buses sometimes run from San Ignacio, too. Alternatively, opt for a tour that provides transport.

When to Get There

If you’re traveling on your own, go to Xunantunich early to beat the tour buses—and the afternoon heat. Late November to mid-April (the dry season) is considered the best time to visit Belize.

Cahal Pech

Although not as popular as Xunantunich, Cahal Pech is worth a stop, especially if you’re into bird watching. The archaeological site is about 6 miles (10 kilometers) from Xunantunich, and visits are typically combined with activities like canoeing. Certain tours take in both Cahal Pech and Xunantunich on the same day.
