North Stradbroke Island (Straddie)

North Stradbroke Island, Queensland, Australia, 4183

The Basics

North Stradbroke Island is the most popular island in Moreton Bay, and many people visit as part of guided day trips from Brisbane. Spot humpback whales, dolphins, and sea turtles along the coast. More active visitors can surf, snorkel, scuba dive, kayak, or take a 4WD tour. Those looking to relax can enjoy scenic walks, beach fishing, picnics, secluded stretches of strand, and the laid-back atmosphere at the three main villages on the island: Amity Point, Point Lookout, and Dunwich.

Those with an interest in indigenous culture can take a cruise from Brisbane, learn the local Aboriginal language, go on a guided bush walk, taste native bush foods, and enjoy traditional song and dance and other performances.

Totally worth it, great trip!
This was my 2nd time on this trip. Both were amazing. Very organized, James was wonderful, searched for wildlife for us, kept us on track and gave great commentary. Scenery was incredible. Even with a rainy day we had a great time. Highly recommend!

Stradbroke Island 4WD Day Trip from Brisbane
Our family had a wonderful day on Stradbroke island. Dave was a great guide and an excellent driver and chief. We got to see all the animals we had hoped for and the kids loved the swim in Brown lake.

North Stradbroke Island SUNSET Tour
Really great tour. From the prompt pick-up to the on-time drop off there was nothing to fault. Our driver/guide Katie was excellent. She engaged everyone in the day and kept the activities running on time. The Island is beautiful and I felt we saw the highlights. There was a good combination of sightseeing, a walking tour and free time at a simply beautiful beach.

Great trip to Straddie! It was the perfect day of site seeing and eating local food! It was unfortunate that we were not informed that there would be opportunities to swim as we didn't bring any swimming attire.

Stradbroke Island 4WD Day Trip from Brisbane
What a great day! Dave is such a charming character. The 4WDriving especially off road was loads of fun. Learnt a lot about the fauna and local animals, as well as history. Dave's super knowledgeable. Enjoyed some beautiful scenery, good laughs and a true blue Aussie experience. We had some delicious home made damper (made by Dave) with delicious tea. Lunch was an outdoor BBQ of sausages with rice and salad. The day flew! Highly recommended

North Stradbroke Island Day Trip from Brisbane
North Stradbroke island is one of the Australians secret gem. A very beautiful island well worth a visit. The driver was great, made a lot of effort to help us see turtles, koalas, kangaroos and birds. Short stops though, would have loved to have at least an hour for both lunch and for the swim at the beach.

Incredible tour with amazing views and a great tour guide (thanks Rio!). Very relaxing and slow paced, allowed time to see everything and soak it all in rather than rushing from place to place.

North Stradbroke Island SUNSET Tour
Perfect for single traveller and/or small group! I had a tour with group of 10 and a van was super clean in my first impression. Tour guide gave us plenty of time for us to look around and enjoy. Tour ran on time. We had diverse range of age in the group and we all get along well - made me feel like traveling with family :) Definitely 5 star to travel with hit the road!

North Stradbroke Island Day Trip from Brisbane
Brian was very informative and knowledgable. He was worried not being able to find Koalas but we were able to see one up close climbing down one tree and climbing another. The pace was good as well as we had enough time for lunch and at the beach afterwards. Just before lunch at the lookout point there were a few kangaroos. Because of the rough see with the big swell we didn't see turtles or dolphins.

North and South Stradbroke Islands

North and South Stradbroke Islands used to be one single island, but savage storms blew through the sand spit between the two in the late 1890s, creating the Jumpinpin Channel. A few years before, a stricken vessel had run aground nearby, and the dynamite that had formed part of its cargo detonated. It is thought that the blasts destabilized the sand mass enough for the subsequent storms to split the island in two.
