Williamsburg

Brooklyn, New York

The Basics

The heart of Williamsburg is Bedford Avenue, which is home to dozens of restaurants and boutiques. On weekends, you'll find artisans selling handicrafts and book vendors unloading paperbacks. Clothes shopping is a good bet in this fashion-forward neighborhood, and vintage and second-hand clothing stores offer everything from old-time denim to cowboy boots.

Williamsburg is also a historically diverse neighborhood. The Hasidic Jewish community lives on the south side, and visitors can book walking tours to learn about Hasidic history and religious practices. The fast-changing neighborhood is also home to waterfront condos, renovated warehouses, and trendy restaurants. Try a walking tour or bike tour to get the lay of the land. Local guides cover the essentials in only a couple hours, leaving visitors well prepared for self-guided adventuring.

A nice slice of Williamsburg
Had an enjoyable time with our tour guide Paul. Very friendly, knowledgeable and sensitive to our needs. I am from Brooklyn, but not this part of the borough, and the places where we ate are definitely places I'd go back on my own -- well curated and more than enough to satisfy our appetites. Not your usual glitzy New York experience, nonetheless 3 hours of yum and fun well spent. Highly recommended

Nick was our tour guide in Williamsburg and we were lucky enough to have him to ourselves! He was just great. Personable, informed and fun. We had to leave a bit early because I wasn't feeling well and we were sorry to leave him early. He was the best.

Enjoyed our food tour in Williamsburg with Paul. We had emapanasas, chicken biscuit sandwich, dumplings, pizza, bagels and donuts. They were all good and satisfying. We even had to doggy bag the bagels because we were so full. Paul is a very knowledgeable and interesting guide.

First of all, our guide, Paul, was super friendly and very knowledgeable of the area. It was wonderful to learn a bit while we ate and walked. The stops were great too and, unlike some food tours, the portion sizes were generous. We were stuffed by the end but so happy. This was a relaxing and enjoyable way to spend the afternoon.

When to Get There

Weekends are bustling on Bedford Avenue. For brunch and boutique shopping, plan to arrive around 10am, since many of the shops open midmorning. For a night out, arrive in the early evening for dinner, but plan to stay late. Since locals love to party, bars and venues stay open well into the night—last call for drinks is 4am; many places don't get going until midnight.
