Things to Do in Cape Tribulation

The remote coastline of Cape Tribulation is a gem of Queensland’s Tropical North, with miles of sun-bleached sands lapped by turquoise waters and fringed by lush rainforest. Not only is the coastal area part of the Daintree National Park, but it’s also the meeting point of two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the exotic wilderness of Daintree Rainforest and the awe-inspiring Great Barrier Reef.

The Basics
The deserted landscapes of Cape Tribulation are ripe for exploring, whether you want to snorkel or scuba dive on the Great Barrier Reef, venture into the rainforest on a 4WD safari, or soar overhead in a helicopter. Full-day tours run from Cairns or Port Douglas, and often combine a visit to Cape Tribulation’s beaches with regional highlights such as Mossman Gorge, the Marrdja Boardwalk, the Alexandra Range Lookout, or the Bloomfield Track.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • Temperatures can reach over 86°F (30°C) in the summer months, so be sure to pack sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses, as well as insect repellent, comfortable shoes, and a swimsuit.
  • Cape Tribulation is a UNESCO-listed conservation area, so stick to designated areas and follow posted rules to avoid disturbing the natural environment.
  • Facilities at Cape Tribulation’s beaches include restrooms, a bar and café, and picnic areas.
How to Get There
Cape Tribulation is located in Daintree Rainforest National Park in North Queensland, around 86 miles (140 kilometers) north of Cairns or 52 miles (83 kilometers) north of Port Douglas. The best way to visit is by car or as part of an organized 4WD or coach tour.

When to Get There
The most popular time to visit Cape Tribulation is during the dry season (April through October), when the weather is cooler and less humid. There are fewer crowds in the wet season (November through March), but you’ll need to keep an eye on the weather forecast for flash floods and box jellyfish, which can be prevalent during this time.

Outdoor activities Around Cape Tribulation
When you’ve finished swimming and snorkeling along the beach, set out to hike through the Daintree Rainforest. Here you can zip through the trees on a jungle surfing canopy tour, saddle up to explore the Cape Trib rainforest on horseback, or spot wildlife on a Daintree River cruise or guided walk through the forest.
