The Basics

If you’re hoping to see turtles, visit Tortuguero National Park as part of a multi-day tour, and head to the beaches at night, where you’ll scan the sand for turtle tracks using the beam of a flashlight. Another highlight is boating the freshwater lagoons, a pristine habitat for more than 300 bird species. You’ll also find three hiking trails in the park—take the one to Tortuguero Hill for stellar views over the canals and beaches.

Tortuguero Park 3 days Vacation Package
Excellent value. We had a wonderful experience the entire time and were shown many animals on our guided tours. Highly recommend. Fernando did an excellent job.
The driver is excellent, but there is tour guide. We have enjoyed the trip, however.

Tortuguero National Park Day Trip from San Jose
A long drive to Tortuguero National Park. Not many animals to be visible, but it still worth the trip to have an experience there. The driver is very good.

Tortuguero National Park Eco Adventure Canoe Tour from San Jose
We enjoyed this tour. It’s definitely not for someone with physical limitations as you are part of the crew rowing the canoe. We saw a lot of wildlife in the National park (turtles, monkeys, snakes, herons, Tucan, crocodiles, caiman, bats, fish, iguanas) to name a few things we saw. Tour was like Disneylands riverboat cruise on steroids. It’s a long day from San Jose so prepare accordingly. I felt like I was part of the rainforest on this tour which is what I was looking for.

Day Trip from San Jose to Tortuguero National Park (Canals)
We saw 3 wild sloths on our way, Carlos and Giovanni stopped the van on the road for us to take pictures. Bring money for bathroom breaks. Food and drinks were good. Bring motion sickness medicines because the van ride round trip is life threatening, Carlos was passING cars on the shoulder, across double lines, and played with the radio while driving. I will say it was a good time and I'm glad we went, but that bucket list has been checked off.

Tortuguero National Park Day Trip from San Jose
Driver and his buddy were both cool! Buddy was a bit talkative, but all in good vibes. Be ready for long trip to Caribbean coast, 3 hours minimum each way. Outside of that, pleasant trip. Pura Vida!

Day Trip from San Jose to Tortuguero National Park (Canals)
Our guide was amazing. Very knowledgeable about the country and it's history. Never rushed anyone, loved answering our questions, and made our trip very enjoyable. We had a wonderful hike, we sow howler monkeys, dart frogs, the ocean and the black volcanic sand, ate a wonderful lunch and had a few minutes in a very small town for shopping. A great day was had by all.

This was an incredible experience! We enjoyed every bit of it and really learned so much that we were able to apply to the rest of our trip in Costa Rica. Could not recommend this tour enough!

Day Trip from San Jose to Tortuguero National Park (Canals)
We had booked this as a group tour but in the end the two of us had a private good. The guide arrived on time to collect us and was very knowledgeable and spoke very good English. On the boat tour our guide / boat driver spotted some animals we would definitely not have seen on our own. We got a bit unlucky with the weather so unfortunately we didnt see any monkeys as it was constantly raining but that just happens when you travel in the summer months. The lunch provided was excellent and a good vegetarian option was served as well. Would definitely recommend this trip.

Day Trip from San Jose to Tortuguero National Park (Canals)
This trip was amazing! Our tour guide was so kind, caring, friendly and so knowledgeable so would definitely recommend him - he was called Giovanni. The canal ride through Tortuguero National park was stunning and it felt like we were out of this world! The trek through the National park was also amazing and our guide pointed out animals like the red frog to us and he climbed with us to the viewpoint. Lunch was so delicious! We then walked along the beach and had some time to relax. I would highly recommend this tour! It was my favourite tour in Costa Rica!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Night visits to see the turtles must be accompanied by a guide, and cameras are prohibited.

  • Wear waterproof boots if you’re planning on hiking, as the trails are often muddy.

  • Take insect repellent and sunscreen, and be prepared for hot, humid conditions year-round.

How to Get There

Remote Tortuguero National Park is accessible only by boat or small plane, so most travelers get there as part of a guided tour. Boats to Tortuguero leave from Moín, near Puerto Limón.

When to Get There

For turtle spotting, visit during peak nesting season (March through May for leatherback turtles, and July through October for green turtles). Go on a night safari to look for frogs, snakes, insects, and turtles; early morning hours are ideal for viewing birds and other wildlife. September, October, and February tend to be the driest months.

The Village of Tortuguero

The gateway to the national park of the same name, Tortuguero is worth exploring in its own right. Although the tiny community with strong Afro-Caribbean roots has no cars or roads, it’s home to a smattering of hotels, restaurants, and souvenir shops.
