La Paz Waterfall Gardens

The Basics

Thanks to its waterfalls and animal exhibits, the Waterfall Gardens are among the top day trips from San Jose. If you have your own transport, it’s best to book advance tickets to the nature park. Otherwise, full-day tours—both private and group tours—are available with transfers from San Jose. Some tours combine a visit to the Waterfall Gardens with nearby attractions, such as Poás Volcano National Park, coffee farm tours, and boat trips on the Sarapiqui River.

Fabulous tour
The crater at Paos Volcano was amazing. Max was an excellent tour guide . The coffee experience was cool but I adored the peace lodge and seeing the birds and butterflies. Such a fun day

Spectacular scenery and great guides!

Coffee Experience, Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens
The waterfalls were spectacular and the Poas Volcano was very interesting and accessible. I also enjoyed hearing about coffee culture from our guide, who has a family history of working around coffee. I was amazed that we saw so much in one day. I also greatly appreciate the leader's and driver's efforts to help my wife make the most of her tour, despite her limited ability to walk distances. The tour was easy to book, and communication regarding pickup times at our hotel was straightforward.

Coffee Experience, Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens
Donald, our tour guide, had an incredible command of both English and Spanish languages. He went back and forth between both with amazing proficiency. He was very knowledgable about the coffee plantation, Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfalls Park. The meals were filling and delicious at both locations. The views were spectacular at Poas and La Paz. It was fun to stop off at a shop between locations and try some local strawberries and other snacks.

Day Tour to Poás Volcano, Café Doka and La Paz Waterfalls
Very interesting tour, exceeded expectations. Small group (4) made it more enjoyable. Excellent breakfast at Café Doka and lunch at LA Paz Waterfalls. Be prepared to walk. The falls are amazing. Jerry is a very knowledgeable guide. Best to visit Poás in the morning before the clouds.

Coffee Experience, Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens
What a great day we had! Everything ran smoothly. Meals were outstanding. The coffee tour was so fascinating and the volcano was amazing (pictures will never do it justice). I would recommend wearing really great walking or hiking shoes because the La Paz Waterfall Gardens walks were serious! Lots of steps down (and back up) my fitbit said I climbed 54 floors - so not for those who can't handle that - but every part of the day was perfect!

Skip the Line:Day Ticket-La Paz Waterfall Gardens Nature Park & Wildlife Refuge
Omg, amazing. We booked on Viator and hitch was less than half of the price our hotel quoted us. Looking up reviews we were a little concerned about transportation, but we Ubered there and back with no issues on a Wednesday(approximately 10am to 4pm from/to San Jose) The place is just amazing! The animals are in appropriate environments, so you don’t feel bad for how they are maintained.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • This is a great stop for families with children as even younger kids can manage the walking trails.

  • Wear shoes with a good tread to manage the sometimes slippery trails.

  • The trails are well maintained, but several sets of stairs mean that not every area is accessible to strollers and wheelchairs.

When to Get There

The dry season, from December to April, is the most popular time to visit Costa Rica. If you visit then, be sure to secure tickets in advance, as popular attractions and tours fill quickly. Find lower prices, fewer crowds, and a bit more rain from May through November—when the waterfalls and forest are especially lush.

Outdoor Activities in the Central Valley

Rushing rivers and emerald-colored coffee plantations make the Central Valley one of Costa Rica’s scenic gems. Don't miss white-water rafting the Pacuare River (Río Pacuare); hiking around the crater of Irazu Volcano National Park; and soaking in the natural hot pools at Tabacon Hot Springs. Try to make time to visit coffee farms in the area too, such as historic Doka Estate.
