Celeste River (Río Celeste)

Tenorio Volcano National Park, Costa Rica

The Basics

Reached by hiking through the surrounding rain forest, Rio Celeste rewards visitors with its natural beauty and a number of other sights along the river. Most notable are the Rio Celeste Waterfall, a favorite photo spot where the river tumbles into a striking blue lagoon; the Teñideros, where two rivers merge in the Celeste; and the Poza Azul, the most stunning “dye pool.”

Many travelers opt to visit the national park on a 1- or 2-day tour from Tamarindo or La Fortuna. Excursions usually include a hike to the waterfall. Although swimming is prohibited within the park, it is possible to bathe in the river’s hot springs or enjoy white-water tubing along the river.

Amazing
Easy hike, my 9 year old daughter made it with no effort. Amazing views of both waterfalls, great guides, lunch was excellent. Worth every penny!

Rio Celeste Hiking, Sloth Sanctuary & Llanos de Cortes Waterfall Tour
Had a great time during this excursions. The views were beautiful, saw some cool animals such as a snake, hummingbird, sloth, and some small fish nibbled at my feet while in the water. The stop for breakfast and provided lunch had really good local cuisine. If you are looking for an extended spot to swim or aren't physically fit to hike or have issues with steep steps, you may want to opt out. There was also time to souvenir shop at the end.

Rio Celeste Waterfall at Tenorio Volcano and Sloth Watching Tour From San Jose
A visit to Rio Celeste waterfall and sloth watching tour was the perfect end to our trip to Costa Rica. The spectacular view of the waterfall, the unreal turquoise color of the water, and sloth watching tour are some of the most beautiful things I've experienced in my life. A truly unforgettable experience. Thank you to our tour guide John, who was full of insightful information about the surrounding and the wild flora and fauna.

Rio Celeste Horseback Riding Tour
David was exceptional, funny and knowledgeable. He spotted a sloth on our way down to the Tarzan swing and took the time to make sure we all got a glimpse. Loved swimming in the pool, adventurous and great for the whole family.

Sloth Tour Plus Rio Celeste Waterfall
This trip was one of the highlights of our honeymoon. Hernan was our tour guide and was awesome. He was very knowledgeable and kind! One reason I booked this tour is because I read reviews about other group trips that feel “rushed”. The pace of the private tour was great and having Hernan tailor the hike specifically to us made for an even more memorable experience! The lunch was delicious too, you work up an appetite after swimming and hiking.

We had an amazing trip to Rio Celeste with Christian! The hike itself was challenging but fun and the views were amazing. Christian and the driver kingly continued to show us wildlife after the hike such as during lunch, one of our favourite experiences of the trip!

Rio Celeste Waterfall at Tenorio Volcano and Sloth Watching Tour From San Jose
Johnhan was a great tour guide. The falls were amazing, as beautiful as the pics. It's about a 3 hour drive each direction. The hike to the falls is a med level, definitely some hills. The breakfast and lunch were great. Sloth tour had a ton of wildlife. Fernando was a great guide for that. Well over 13hours from pick up to drop off. Highly recomend.

How to Get There

When to Get There

The river’s startling color change is best viewed during the dry season (December to April). Excess rainfall can dilute the reactive chemicals, leaving the waters with a less appealing muddy hue. The busiest period is from February to April, when it’s best to make an early start. Hikers allowed on the trail are limited, so you might find yourself having to wait if it gets too crowded.

Tenorio Volcano National Park

Hiking is the main activity in Tenorio Volcano National Park and there are a number of well-signposted short trails to follow. The Waterfall Trail is the main attraction, but worthwhile detours include the Mirador, a 5-minute trail that affords gorgeous views across the rain forest; and the Tenorio Volcano trail, although it’s not possible to climb to the summit. The park also harbors a wealth of wildlife, including tapirs, howler monkeys, ocelots, and jaguars.
