Columbia Reef

Cozumel, Riviera Maya & the Yucatan

The Basics

Depths rarely exceed 40 feet (12 meters) in the Columbia Shallows, making this portion of the reef ideal for snorkelers, photographers, and novice divers. Columbia Deep, with an impressive drop-off of 80 feet (24 meters) is better suited for experienced divers looking to explore caves and tunnels.

Because of its proximity to Cozumel, Columbia Reef is best explored on a snorkeling or diving tour from the island’s downtown marina. Most excursions visit Columbia Reef along with Palancar Reef and El Cielo Marine Park, and sometimes include hotel pickup and drop-off.

Exceptional crew, great food. Felt like I was a local hanging out with locals. We visited 4 spots and saw diverse aquatic life.

Cozumel Snorkeling Tour: Palancar, Columbia and El Cielo Reefs
Guides were amazing. Very caring and made sure to watch for our safety. We saw beautiful fish and coral. Wonderful excursion Only complaint is that it advertises soda as an option and there was zero on the boat.

Cozumel Snorkeling Tour: Palancar, Columbia and El Cielo Reefs
This was the highlight of our entire cruise. Alex, Miguel, and El Capitan were amazing! We've been snorkeling in other carribbean areas and this was the best, especially at Columbia Reef. The crew was friendly, and patient with the less experienced people but didn't hold anyone back from checking things out on their own. They even gave us homemade guacamole as a snack.

Cozumel Snorkeling Tour: Palancar, Columbia and El Cielo Reefs
What an amazing excursion! We loved snorkeling at m the reef, with the starfish, the sea turtles, and finishing with the stingrays on the sandbar. It was all in all a magical experience! Loved our guide Alberto and that it was a small group. Highly recommend this tour! Bit be prepared — no sunscreen allowed due to damage it can do to the coral so if you don’t have a good base tan, wear a sun shirt!

Cozumel Snorkeling Tour: Palancar, Columbia and El Cielo Reefs
Had trouble locating where to meet up and had to call the number that was almost impossible to find. Meet up at the pier where the ferries are, they will take you in a taxi to the docking area. Our guide was amazing and funny! Definitely made the experience worthwhile! He told us we got lucky enough to see all the animals. We saw fish, stingrays, barracudas, turtles and small nurse shark. Guacamole and chips with drinks are provided! Definitely recommend!!

When to Get There

You can visit Columbia Reef year-round, but it’s busiest from December through April, when the weather tends to be sunny and warm. There are fewer crowds during hurricane season (May through October), but be sure to check the forecast for storms.

Cozumel’s expansive coral reefs are some of the largest in the world. Paradise Reef and Palancar Gardens are ideal spots for novice divers and snorkelers due to their shallow depth, and offer a chance to glimpse sea turtles, colorful fish, towering coral spires, and gently waving sea fans. The Palancar Caves are probably the most famous dive site, with huge brain corals and swim-through tunnels. Palancar Horseshoe, a natural underwater amphitheater made entirely of coral, is another must-see.
