The Basics

A snorkeling or scuba diving excursion is one of the best way to experience Palancar Reef, allowing you to see the area’s robust wildlife and varied coral structures. Some diving and snorkeling tours visit Palancar along with nearby Columbia Reef and El Cielo marine park—a sandy, starfish-filled expanse of blue Caribbean ocean. Other excursions combine snorkeling with a sailing trip or island beach party. Most tours leave from the marina in downtown Cozumel, Palancar Beach (Playa Palancar), or from your hotel pier, while some excursions include round-trip transportation from Playa del Carmen.

Cozumel Snorkeling Tour: Palancar, Columbia and El Cielo Reefs
Guides were amazing. Very caring and made sure to watch for our safety. We saw beautiful fish and coral. Wonderful excursion Only complaint is that it advertises soda as an option and there was zero on the boat.

Cozumel Snorkeling Tour: Palancar, Columbia and El Cielo Reefs
What an amazing excursion! We loved snorkeling at m the reef, with the starfish, the sea turtles, and finishing with the stingrays on the sandbar. It was all in all a magical experience! Loved our guide Alberto and that it was a small group. Highly recommend this tour! Bit be prepared — no sunscreen allowed due to damage it can do to the coral so if you don’t have a good base tan, wear a sun shirt!

Cozumel Snorkeling Tour: Palancar, Columbia and El Cielo Reefs
Had trouble locating where to meet up and had to call the number that was almost impossible to find. Meet up at the pier where the ferries are, they will take you in a taxi to the docking area. Our guide was amazing and funny! Definitely made the experience worthwhile! He told us we got lucky enough to see all the animals. We saw fish, stingrays, barracudas, turtles and small nurse shark. Guacamole and chips with drinks are provided! Definitely recommend!!

The snorkelling and the beautiful turquoise blue of the water. The staff and the captain are great guys and work very hard to both accommodate and enhance the experience.

The Starfish were beautiful. We also enjoyed the fruit and sandwiches. We weren’t impressed with the guy taking pictures with fish food in his pocket

Cozumel Snorkeling Tour: Palancar, Columbia and El Cielo Reefs
Very good service. With the weather conditions not ideal and access to the 3 islands was restricted, the company emailed us to ask if we wanted a refund, reschedule or do a back-up snorkling tour. Since we were leaving the next day, we opted for the back up tour which was also very nice and our guide and boat driver were super sweet and encouraged our young children to do it too. We look forward to visiting El Cielo next time with Maybe Tours.

Cozumel Snorkeling Tour: Palancar, Columbia and Cielo Reefs
Did this tour as part of our honeymoon. Staff are amazing, reeds are gorgeous. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to see El Cielo. They also added a bonus stop to see some sea turtles. Highly recommend. A must do whilst in Cozumel.

Must-See Dive Sites at Palancar Reef

While snorkelers typically visit the shallowest parts of Palancar’s coral reefs, scuba divers have several world-famous spots to explore. The Palancar Caves are probably the most famous dive site, with huge brain corals and swim-through tunnels. Palancar Horseshoe is another massive formation of huge corals. Less experienced divers can visit Palancar Gardens, a shallower spot with mellow currents.
